Truman State too much for S&T

ROLLA, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners missed six of their final shots and shot just 32 percent in the second half of its 70-51 loss to Truman State on Saturday afternoon at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. The Bulldogs didn't shoot it much better in the second half, but they made 13 of its 15 attempts from the foul line.

Truman (12-7, 6-5 GLVC) opened the game strong scoring 10 of the first 12 points before the Lady Miners (4-15, 0-11 GLVC) settled down and began to cut into the Bulldog lead. S&T closed the deficit to 20-17 after a layup by Joe'l Bland (St. Charles, Mo./Homeschooled), but then Allie Norton began to take control. Norton hit three straight three-pointers pushing the lead to 29-17.

The Lady Miners continued to fight going on a 16-5 run over the next five and a half minutes to get within 34-33 after a basket by Linda Pagrode (Jaunolaine, Latvia/Riga 99). S&T was unable to get over the hump though as Truman scored the final four points of the half to head into the intermission up 38-33.

The Lady Miners shot 48.1 percent (13-for-27) from the floor in the opening stanza, knocked down both of their three-point attempts and were 5-for-5 at the foul line. They outrebounded the Bulldogs 18-14 and their bench outscored Truman's 20-2. Brittany Andersen (Saint John, Ind./Andrean ) led S&T with nine points while Runge added seven points.

The Bulldogs were 13-of-29 (44.8 percent) from the field, shot 42 percent from three and were 7-for-9 at the foul line. Norton was 5-of-6 from three, while the rest of the team was 0-for-6 from beyond the arc. Norton led all scorers with 17 points while Michalina Tomczak had seven.

The Lady Miners started the second half strong scoring the first four points to cut the lead to one, but Truman countered with a 12-5 run to push the lead to eight points with nine minutes to go.

S&T got as close as six before the Bulldogs put the game away with a 14-2 run over the next six minutes. Truman led by as many as 20 points in the contest.

The Lady Miners finished the game shooting 40.4 percent (21-for-52) from the field, 2-of-4 from beyond the arc and shot 78 percent at the foul line. They outscored the Bulldogs 24-22 in points in the point and 28-10 in points off the bench. Andersen led S&T with 11 points while Sandra Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) had eight. Runge and Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) had seven points each.

Norton led three Truman players in double figures with 22 points while Tomczak added 15 and Ashley Hartwig had 13. The Bulldogs finished the game shooting 42.3 percent (22-for-52) from the floor, they made six of their 16 attempts from three and went 20-of-24 at the foul line. Truman outscored the Lady Miners 14-10 in points off turnovers and 7-4 in second chance points.

S&T's four-game homestand continues next Thursday when it hosts McKendree in a GLVC contest at 5:30 p.m. The Bearcats suffered a 64-56 loss against Bellarmine on Saturday afternoon.
