Three-point barrage lifts S&T over McKendree 84-44; snaps 10-game losing streak

Lady Miners hit 12 three's in the contest

ROLLA, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners knocked down 12 three-pointers, two shy of the single game record, in its 84-44 win over McKendree on Thursday evening. The win snaps S&T's 10-game losing streak and lifted them to its first win in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

The Lady Miners (5-15, 1-11 GLVC) fell behind  0:19 into the contest, but the deficit didn't last long as Linda Pagrode (Jaunolaine, Latvia/Riga 99) began the three-point shooting display with the first of her three three's in the opening half 0:45 later. S&T stretched its lead to as many as four points early but were unable to shake loose of the Bearcats (2-18, 1-11 GLVC).

The Lady Miners held a one-point lead at the halfway point of the opening stanza before a 7-2 run allowed them to build a six-point advantage on a jumper by Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy). McKendree closed back to within four on the next possession before S&T pulled away finishing the frame scoring 20 of the final 24 points. Leigh-Ann Kesper (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) had eight points in the run while Pagrode added five, Joe'l Bland (St. Charles, Mo./Homeschooled) contributed four and Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) had three.

The Lady Miners shot a blistering 57 percent (17-for-30) from the floor and were 4-of-9 from beyond the arc. They outrebounded the Bearcats 20-to-12 and turned eight turnovers into 12 points. S&T also had the edge in the paint outscoring the 'Cats 14-6. Pagrode led all scorers with 13 points on 4-of-4 shooting with 3 three-pointers and a pair of free throws. Kesper added eight while Arand dropped in seven and J. Douvier added six.

McKendree was just 8-for-26 (31 percent) from the field, 0-of-3 from beyond the arc and 6-for-8 at the foul line. Caty Ponce, Jameeka Bouie and Shannon McGinnis each had four points in the first 20 minutes.

The Lady Miners didn't let up in the second half scoring 12 of the first 14 points to extend the lead to 30 points four minutes into the stanza. Arand began the barrage with four three's and scored the team's first 20 points of the second half as S&T built a 62-29 lead by the 13:11 mark.

The Lady Miners never saw their lead dip below 30 points over the final 13 minutes and eventually led by as many as 41.

S&T shot only 52 percent in the second half, but still finished the game connecting on 33-of-61 shots (54.1 percent) and was 12-for-20 from downtown. They outrebounded the Bearcats 40-25 and turned 18 turnovers into 19 points. Arand led all scorers with a career-high 29 points on 11-of-16 shooting and was 7-for-10 from beyond the arc. Her seven three-pointers are the second most in a single game in school history along with Trish Van Diggelen and Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein). Her 29 points were the most scored by a Lady Miner freshman since Janel McNeal scored 29 against Northwest Missouri State on January 23, 1999.

Pagrode added 16 points and had a perfect shooting night going 5-for-5 from the floor, 4-of-4 from three and hit both of her free throws. Sandra Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) also finished with 10 points while J. Douvier had nine points and seven rebounds.

McKendree finished the game shooting only 32 percent from the floor (16-for-50), was 1-for-10 from beyond the arc and made 11 of 16 foul shots. Ponce was the lone Bearcat in double figures with seven points while Emily Pusheck added eight and Kelsee Ennis had six.

The Lady Miners conclude their four-game homestand on Saturday afternoon hosting Illinois Springfield at 1 p.m. The Prairie Stars suffered an 82-46 loss at 19th ranked Drury on Thursday evening.
