ROLLA, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners played the Quincy Hawks even for 35 minutes on Thursday, but were undone by a five minute stretch early in the second half in its
68-52 loss. S&T turned the ball over a season-high 28 times in the contest and allowed 30 points off those turnovers.
Quincy (12-6, 7-3) got out of the gates fast scoring the first seven points of the game before the Lady Miners (4-14, 0-10 GLVC) settled in and eventually tied the game at 7-all on a layup by
Brittany Andersen (Saint John, Ind./Andrean ). The Hawks regained the lead a couple of times, but each time S&T answered back to tie it up.
Quincy gained some separation after the game was tied at 11 with an 8-2 run building its lead to 19-13 with 5:07 to go in the opening half. The Lady Miners clawed their way back tying the game at 22 when
Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) stole the ball and converted an old fashioned three-point play with 0:54 left in the frame.
S&T had a chance to go into the locker room with the lead, but
Joe'l Bland (St. Charles, Mo./Homeschooled) was called for an offensive foul and the Hawks' Maggie Cunningham hit a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to send Quincy into the break with a 25-22 lead.
Both sides struggled to shoot the ball as the Lady Miners shot just 36 percent (9-for-25) from the floor while the Hawks were 10-of-28 (35.7 percent). S&T outrebounded Quincy 20-13, but 16 turnovers resulted in 13 points for the Hawks.
Greenwood and
Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) led the Lady Miners with six points apiece in the stanza. Carly Beebe led all scorers with 11 points in the frame while Anika Webster and Cunningham added five points apiece.
The Lady Miners scored five of the first nine points of the second half to cut the Quincy lead to two points just two minutes into the frame, but then went cold for the next 4:30 as the Hawks used a 15-0 run to build a 17-point advantage. Erin Mennemeyer and Beebe had six points apiece in that game deciding run.
S&T battled back over the next eight minutes getting to within seven after a jumper by
Leigh-Ann Kesper (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) with 5:17 left in the game. That would be the closest it got though as it was held to four points over the final five minutes as it missed its last five shots from the floor and turned it over four times in that span.
Arand was the lone Lady Miner in double figures with 12 points while Greenwood added eight. Bland and
Linda Pagrode (Jaunolaine, Latvia/Riga 99) finished with seven points each. S&T shot nearly 40 percent (19-for-48) from the floor, but connected on just 3-of-8 from beyond the arc and was 11-for-14 at the foul line. It outrebounded Quincy 34-30 and matched a season-high with 13 steals.
The Hawks had four players finish in double figures led by Beebe with 17. Webster and Cunningham added 13 each while Mennemeyer finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds. For the game Quincy shot 43.1 percent (25-for-58), was 5-of-16 from the three-point line and 13-for-19 at the foul line.
The Lady Miners continue their homestand on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Truman State at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs lost at Drury 74-60 on Thursday.
