ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The Missouri S&T Lady Miners were held to just three points during a pivotal seven minute stretch in the second half of its
86-55 loss at Maryville on Saturday afternoon at Moloney Arena in St. Louis, Mo. S&T trailed by 18 at the half and got to within eight at the midway point of the second half before enduring its cold spell.
S&T (4-13, 0-9 GLVC) opened the game scoring five of the first seven points before the Saints (11-7, 5-4 GLVC) got rolling with seven straight to take the lead on a layup by Rita Flynn. Maryville stretched its lead to nine points midway through the frame, but the Lady Miners continued to hang around thanks to the play of
Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) who scored nine points in the opening frame and were within 24-18 at one time.
S&T then went over six minutes without scoring as the Saints stretched its lead to 21 as Carly Frala led the run with five points.
Leigh-Ann Kesper (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville)'s jumper from the right baseline snapped the run with less than two minutes to go in the stanza.
The Lady Miners shot 44 percent (11-for-25) from the floor in the opening half, but was just 1-of-6 from beyond the arc. S&T outrebounded Maryville 18-14, but turned it over 11 times in the frame. Arand led all scorers with her nine points while Kesper and
Brittany Andersen (Saint John, Ind./Andrean ) had four points each.
The Saints finished the opening half knocking down 15 of their 30 shots and made 38.5 percent of their attempts from beyond the arc. They were also 9-for-11 from the foul line. Frala, Jordynn Martin and Ali Ringering led Maryville with seven points apiece.
The Saints extended their halftime lead to 20 three minutes into the second half, but S&T started to get hot from the three-point line making five three's in the first 10-plus minutes of the second half as part of 20-8 run to cut the Maryville deficit to 59-51 with 9:40 to play.
The Saints regained control getting a bucket on the ensuing possession sparking a 22-1 run over the next seven minutes to push its lead back over 20 points.
The Lady Miners made 10 of their first 20 shots to begin the second half but missed 12 straight shots in their scoreless drought as Maryville was able to pull away building its largest lead of the game at 31 points.
S&T finished the game shooting 36 percent (22-for-61) from the field, it was 6-of-17 from beyond the arc and were 5-for-10 at the foul line.
Brittany Andersen (Saint John, Ind./Andrean ) scored 12 of her 16 points in the second half to lead the Lady Miners while Arand finished with 11.
The Saints finished the game knocking down 29 of their 56 shots (52 percent) and went 10-for-21 from beyond the arc. They were also 18-of-23 at the charity stripe. Martin led four Saints in double figures with 15 points. Frala added 13 while Jade Rogers had 12 and Flynn finished with 11.
S&T returns home next Thursday evening hosting Quincy in a 5:30 p.m. contest at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. It's the start of a four-game home stand for the Lady Miners.
