Second half struggles prove costly for Lady Miners

LIBERTY, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners shot just 30 percent from the field, turned the ball over 11 times and were outscored by 17 points in its 74-61 loss at William Jewell College on Thursday evening. S&T had two players finish in double figure scoring but it wasn't enough as the Cardinals (9-5, 4-2 GLVC) shot 47 percent from the field in the second half.

The game was tied early before the WJC went on a 12-1 run to build an 11-point lead six minutes into the contest. S&T (4-10, 0-6 GLVC) slowly began to creep back into the game thanks to six straight points. The Cardinals stopped the run momentarily on a bucket by Christian Benton-Keys before the Lady Miners ran off seven straight and tied the game on a three-pointer by
Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) with 8:15 left in the half.

S&T erased a 23-21 deficit by running off nine straight points to grab its largest lead of the night at 30-23. Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) accounted for six points in the run while Brittany Andersen (Saint John, Ind./Andrean ) added two and Greenwood had one. William Jewell cut the deficit to 30-27 after two free throws by Aerial Smith with 2:11 to go in the frame, but the Lady Miners scored four of the last seven points of the half to head into the break with a 34-30 lead.

S&T shot 43.5 percent (10-for-23) in the frame, was 2-of-4 from beyond the arc and shot 67 percent at the foul line. It outrebounded the Cardinals 20-13, but turned the ball over 13 times. J. Douvier led the Lady Miners with 12 points while Greenwood dropped in eight.

William Jewell shot 40.7 percent (11-for-27) from the field, was 3-of-11 from the three-point line and shot 56 percent at the foul line. The Cardinals outscored S&T 14-11 in points off turnovers. Hayli Jo Smith led WJC with 11 points in the first 20 minutes.

The Lady Miners five of the first eight points of the second half to extend its halftime lead to six points two minutes into the frame. The Cardinals then took control of the game over the next five minutes going on an 18-2 run to grab a 10-point lead.

S&T made another run to close the deficit to 56-50 with 7:19 left in the game, but that was the closest it got as the Cardinals countered with a 12-0 run to build an 18 point lead. They eventually led by 20 before the Lady Miners scored the final seven points of the contest to make it a 13-point final margin.

S&T finished the game shooting 36 percent (19-for-53) from the field, 33.3 percent from beyond the arc and 70 percent at the foul line. It outrebounded the Cardinals 40-35, but was unable to overcome 24 turnovers in the contest which WJC turned into 31 points. Greenwood led the Lady Miners with 16 points, J. Douvier added 13 while Kimberly Runge (Freedom, Wis./Freedom) finished with eight.

The Cardinals finished the contest knocking down 25 of its 58 shots (43 percent) from the field, was 7-for-23 from the perimeter and shot 68 percent at the foul line. A. Smith led four William Jewell players in double figures with 14 points. Benton-Keys dropped in 13, Maddie Nelson added 12 and H. Smith had 11.

S&T is back in action on Saturday afternoon when it faces Rockhurst beginning at 1 p.m.
