S&T falls at Rockhurst 70-55

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners dropped its sixth straight contest with a 70-55 loss at Rockhurst on Saturday afternoon at the Mason-Halpin Field House in Kansas City, Mo. S&T shot just 35 percent for the game while Rockhurst connected on 42 percent of its attempts from the field.

The Lady Miners (4-11, 0-7 GLVC) got out to an early 7-4 lead three minutes into the contest. The Hawks (8-7, 2-5 GLVC) then got going as Mary Dineen got loose and hit a three to tie the game sparking a 12-0 run to give Rockhurst the lead for good. S&T wouldn't get closer than seven points the rest of the half as it struggled to hang onto the ball turning it over 12 times and shot just 31 percent (8-for-26) from the field.

The Hawks took advantage of the turnovers scoring 12 points off the Lady Miner miscues and shot 45 percent from the floor and were 5-of-13 from beyond the arc. Becca Strobbe led Rockhurst with eight points in the frame while Dineen added seven. Laura Wilson and Kendall Hart added six each for the Hawks as they went into the locker room with a 41-22 lead.

Demetria Snaden (Evansville, Ind./Evansville North) led S&T with five points while Kimberly Runge (Freedom, Wis./Freedom) and Leigh-Ann Kesper (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) had four points each. The Lady Miners were just 1-of-9 from beyond the arc and 5-of-6 at the foul line.
Rockhurst stretched its halftime lead to 30 points five minutes into the second half scoring 17 of the first 23 points of the frame. They continued to hold that advantage until 7:34 remained in the contest.

S&T rattled off 17 straight points and held the Hawks scoreless for nearly seven minutes as it cut the lead to 68-55 on a bucket by Joe'l Bland (St. Charles, Mo./Homeschooled) with less than a minute to play. Rockhurst added the final two points of the contest on a pair of free throws by Staci Thomas with 0:38 left.

The Lady Miners shot the ball better in the second half connecting on 12 of their 31 attempts to finish the contest shooting 20-for-57 from the floor. Bland and Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) were the lone S&T players in double figures as Bland finished with 12 while Douvier added 10. Douvier also had 12 rebounds. Snaden and Runge had seven points each while Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) dropped home six.

Rockhurst was led in scoring by Wilson and Strobbe with 11 points each while Dineen had nine. Haleigh Cindrich led the Hawks with eight rebounds.

The Lady Miners return to action next Thursday when the travel to St. Louis to take on Missouri-St. Louis at 5:30 p.m.
