ROLLA, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners were unable to overcome a hot shooting Southern Indiana ball club in its
75-55 defeat on Saturday afternoon at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. S&T shot just 35 percent from the floor in the contest while the Screaming Eagles connected on 52 percent of their attempts.
After a brief tie to start the game, USI (11-3, 3-1 GLVC) scored 14 of the next 18 points building an early 10-point advantage eight minutes into the contest. The Lady Miners (4-9, 0-5 GLVC) countered with a 9-2 run thanks to seven points from
Brittany Andersen (Saint John, Ind./Andrean ) and two from
Kimberly Runge (Freedom, Wis./Freedom) to cut the lead to 18-15 halfway through the frame.
The Screaming Eagles answered with a 15-0 run of its own and at one point scored six points in a 0:10 stretch building an 18-point lead with six minutes to go in the stanza. S&T chipped away at the lead over the next four minutes getting to within 35-30 after a bucket by
Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School). The Lady Miners had opportunities to get closer than that but missed five free throws in the half.
USI ended the half scoring the final six points to head into the locker room up 41-30 at the break.
S&T shot 41 percent (11-for-27) from the field in the first half, was 3-for-5 from beyond the arc, but made only 5-of-10 at the foul line. Andersen led the Lady Miners with 10 points while Greenwood added seven off the bench.
Southern Indiana was 14-for-28 from the field, shot 50 percent from three and was 9-for-10 at the foul line. Anna Hackert led all scorers with 12 points while Autumn Miller added nine and Libby Ogden and Kaydie Grooms had seven each.
The two sides swapped the first four points of the second half before the Screaming Eagles scored nine of the next 11 points to build an 18-point lead 7:05 into the frame. S&T closed the deficit to 12 on back-to-back three-pointers from
Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) but that was as close as it got as USI used a 17-9 run to build a 20-point lead with less than six minutes to play. It led by as many as 21 in the contest before the Lady Miners hit a late free throw to cut the deficit to 20.
The Lady Miners made just 20-of-57 shots but did shoot 58 percent from beyond the arc, however they were just 8-for-15 at the charity stripe. Andersen and Greenwood led the way with 12 points while Arand dropped in 11 while Runge added seven. S&T was outrebounded 33-29 in the contest.
USI was 27-for-53 shooting the ball, shot 39 percent from three and was 16-for-18 at the foul line. Hackert led four Screaming Eagles in double figures with 14 points and also had 12 rebounds. Miller and Grooms had 13 apiece while Mary O'Keefe finished with 12. USI forced S&T into 21 turnovers turning those into 20 points.
The Lady Miners hit the road for four straight beginning next Thursday evening in Liberty, Mo., against William Jewell College at 5:30 p.m.
