S&T’s second half rallies comes up short in season opening defeat

Box Score (Springfield, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners second half comeback came up a goal short as it dropped its season opener to Missouri Southern 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Harrison Stadium in Springfield, Mo. S&T allowed three goals in the first 28 minutes of the contest.

Missouri Southern (1-1) scored the first goal in the fourth minute when Karley Thomas played a ball up to Hannah Bomar. She beat the defense and slid a pass across the box to Kelsey Haist who was alone and she put it into an open net. The Lions struck again nine minutes later. A turnover by the Lady Miners allowed Bomar the opportunity. She dribbled down the sideline got past a defender and beat Kaitlyn Deister (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) for her first goal of the season.

MSSU added its third tally in the 28th minute. Carly Cecil made a play up from midfield to Aubrey Lindsey. Lindsey settled it and chipped one over Deister's head from 25 yards out.
The Lions held a 4-3 edge in shots in the opening frame with three of the four being on goal.

S&T (0-1) came out like a different team in the second half and controlled most of the action. Julie Bride (Stilwell, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) got them on the scoreboard in the 56th minute. She took long pass from Kendall Fitzpatrick (Houston, Texas/Memorial ), got behind the defense and the keeper for a shot into a wide open goal.

The Lady Miners kept the pressure almost scoring again in the 60th minute off a corner kick. Fitzpatrick served a ball to the back post for Morgan Henry (Camdenton, Mo./Camdenton). Henry got a head on it but it off the post and was cleared off the line. Henry had another chance in the 62nd minute but her shot sailed high.

Sabrina Hostler (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) made it a one goal game in the 71st minute. Alex McCord (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) played a ball up to Alexandria Butler (Barnhart, Mo./Notre Dame) who slid a pass into the middle of the box and the keeper came out to far allowing Hostler to put it into an open net. Hostler nearly tied the contest in the 81st minute on a similar play, but this time the ball sailed wide left.

S&T outshot Missouri Southern 7-0 in the second half and finished the contest with 10 shots to four for the Lions.

The Lady Miners open the home portion of their schedule on Tuesday when they host Lindenwood at 7 pm.
