Box Score 2 (Chillicothe, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners swept its doubleheader against Northwest Missouri
5-3 and
5-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Danner Park in Chillicothe, Mo. S&T finished the day with 12 hits and got some clutch hitting to complete the sweep.
S&T (9-24) took advantage of two errors in the opening inning.
Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) reached on a dropped pop up by the shortstop to start the first game and then stole second.
Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) then reached on a throwing error which allowed Davis to score and Michaelis to go to second. With
Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) batting Michaelis stole third and then scored on
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield)'s single to make it 2-0.
Northwest Missouri (16-24) answered with a run in the second to cut the Lady Miner lead to 2-1. S&T added to its lead in the third. With one out Michaelis singled and advanced all the way to third on a passed ball and a wild pitch. Slemp then walked and stole second to put two in scoring position. With two outs
Adrienne Kruse (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) singled back up the middle to make it 4-1.
The Bearcats cut the lead to 4-3 in the fourth inning on a two-run home run to right off the bat of Madison Jones. NWMSU then got the tying run into scoring position but
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) got out of the jam with a pair of groundouts.
The Bearcats had two on in the fifth and loaded the bases in the sixth with the chance to take the lead but Strope was able to get out of both jams with some help from her defense to keep the lead.
S&T added to its lead in the seventh when
Cassie Rizzo (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) led the inning off with a home run to right for her first roundtripper of the season. Northwest got a lead-off double in the home half of the seventh but Strope retired the next three hitters to end the game.
Michaelis finished the game with two hits while Baker, Kruse and Rizzo had one hit apiece. Kruse had two runs batted in. Strope earned the win allowing three runs on 11 hits. She struck out two while walking one to improve to 5-9 on the season.
In the nightcap the Lady Miners fell behind in the first inning giving up an unearned run. They responded though scoring three times on four hits in the home half of the third.
Olivia Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada) led the inning off with a single and moved to second on a passed ball. She went to third on a single by Rizzo. Davis squeezed home Culbertson to tie the game. Michaelis then singled to left to move Rizzo to third for Slemp. Michaelis stole second then Slemp lined a single into right center to give S&T the lead at 3-1.
The Bearcats loaded the bases in the top of the fourth with no one out against
Bethany Rader (Memphis, Mo./Scotland County ) on a single and two walks.
Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) came in and didn't allow any of the runs to score getting a pair of pop outs and a line out.
The Lady Miners added to their lead in the fifth. Michaelis struck out but reached on a wild pitch to start the inning. Slemp then worked a walk and Baker sacrificed the runners to second and third. After a foul out
Jackie Lybarger (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West) came through ripping a single to left center to drive in both runs to make it 5-1.
Northwest got a run back in the sixth and then made things interesting in the seventh getting a single and a double to bring the tying run to the plate with no one out. Strope came in to relieve Duncan and retired the next three hitters to earn her first save of the year.
Slemp and Lybarger led the offensive attack combining for four of the team's seven hits. Rader started and lasted the first three-plus innings allowing one unearned run on four hits and two walks. Duncan went the next three-plus innings allowing two runs on five hits to get the victory and improve to 3-8 on the season.
S&T returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Springfield, Ill., to take on the University of Illinois Springfield in a GLVC doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
