Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Rolla, Mo.) – Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield)'s two-out double in the fifth which scored Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) from first proved to be the difference as the Missouri S&T Lady Miners held on for a 4-3 win over the Lewis Flyers in the first game on Friday afternoon at the S&T Softball Field. The Flyers took the nightcap 5-0.

Lewis (15-21, 9-14 GLVC) jumped on top in the first game with an unearned run in the third inning. Brittany Russell led off the inning with a single and then Nicole Kappelman laid down a bunt to third. She beat the play and a pair of errors on the play allowed Russell to score from first. Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) avoided further damage getting three straight groundouts.

S&T (11-28, 6-20 GLVC) answered in the home half of the third scoring three times on four hits. Cassie Rizzo (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) and Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) led off with back-to-back infield hits. Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) gave the Lady Miners hitting a 1-0 pitch over the right fielder's head for a triple scoring Rizzo and Davis. After a pair of outs Adrienne Kruse (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) lined one off the pitcher for an RBI single to make it 3-1.

The score remained 3-1 until the bottom of the fifth. With one out Michaelis singled and then Slemp tried to shoot one through the right side, but the ball hit Michaelis for the second out. Baker came through driving a 1-0 pitch to the gap in right center scoring Slemp.

The Flyers countered with three straight hits and a run to start the sixth inning. Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) relieved Strope with the tying runs in scoring position and allowed just one of the runs to score getting three consecutive outs. Duncan then set down Lewis in order in the seventh to earn her first save of the season.

The Lady Miners outhit the Flyers 9-5 in the opener with Michaelis, Slemp and Kruse recording two hits apiece. Strope went the first five innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits with two walks and a strikeout to improve to 6-10.

The second game was scoreless until the fourth inning. Carly Jaworski led off with a double to left center and Justina Doll came into run for her. Alyssa Moseley sacrificed Doll to third and then Doll scored on a single by Ali Brems. S&T had the tying run in scoring position in both the fourth and fifth innings but couldn't get the run home.

Lewis broke the game open scoring four runs in the final two innings.

The Lady Miners struggled to figure out Kelly Bowler as she set down the first 10 hitters she faced before Michaelis's single in the fourth. They finished with just three hits total. Kruse and Rizzo were the other two with hits.

Bethany Rader (Memphis, Mo./Scotland County ) started and went the first 5.1 innings allowing three runs on seven hits. She had a strikeout and didn't walk a batter. Duncan went the final 1.2 innings allowing two runs on four hits.

S&T returns to action tomorrow afternoon when it hosts Wisconsin-Parkside in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. The Lady Miners will honor their three seniors in between games of the doubleheader.
