Box Score 2 (Rolla, Mo.) – A couple of weeks ago the Missouri S&T Lady Miners were struggling to get hits, now it's getting those hits but can't get the big one. That proved to be the case again on Sunday as the Lady Miners had 10 hits in the doubleheader but stranded 14 runners as they lost to William Jewell
5-2 and
4-0.
The Cardinals (10-12, 6-6 GLVC) broke on top in the first game scoring four times in the third inning. Faith Song had the big blow in the inning hitting a three-run homer to right field. S&T's (3-14, 2-8 GLVC) bats were held silenced by Rachel Hayden as she set down the first 10 hitters before
Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) hit a solo home run to left field with one out in the fourth.
WJC answered that run in the fifth when Song flew out to Michaelis to bring home Rachel Potvin from third. The Lady Miners got a run back in the sixth inning on an RBI single from
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) scoring
Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ). S&T loaded the bases with two outs, but
Adrienne Kruse (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) was robbed of two RBIs on a great catch by Brittany Madsen in shallow right.
The Lady Miners were held to four hits in the opener and were led by
Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) with two.
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) suffered the loss allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits while striking out four and walking one.
Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) threw the final two innings allowing one hit and striking out a batter.
In the back end of the doubleheader the S&T had a golden opportunity to score in the first inning getting back-to-back hits from Davis and Michaelis to open the game; however, both runners would be left stranded. The Cardinals opened the scoring in the second putting two on with two outs. A passed ball allowed both runners to move up and Kelsey Teneycke eventually scored on a single from Ashley Barrett.
The Lady Miners had a chance to take the lead in the home half of the inning putting runners on second and third with two outs. Davis hit a blooper behind three, but was robbed of the hit by Eileen Greenwood who caught it to end the threat.
WJC added another run in the third on a double by Hayden to score Potvin from first. S&T had another in the fifth getting back-to-back singles with one out, but were unable to get that big hit. William Jewell added single runs in the sixth and seventh to conclude the scoring.
The Lady Miners finished the second game with six hits and were led by Davis and Michaelis with two apiece.
Bethany Rader (Memphis, Mo./Scotland County ) suffered the loss allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits and a walk. Duncan came into pitch the final five innings allowing two runs on four hits with four punchouts.
S&T heads to Memphis, Tenn., on Tuesday to take on Christian Brothers University in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The Lady Miners will take on Union University in a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon in Jackson, Tenn., starting at 2 p.m.
