Box Score 2 (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners couldn't contain the high powered Central Missouri Jennie offense as the Jennies took both ends of the doubleheader
5-2 and
16-6 in five innings on Wednesday at the S&T Softball Field. S&T finished the doubleheader with 14 hits, but stranded nine runners in the doubleheader.
The Jennies (12-8) struck first in the opener with single runs in the second and fifth innings to take a 2-0 lead. S&T (3-10) tied the contest in the home half of the fifth.
Olivia Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada) led the inning off with a double to left and then two batters later
Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) launched a 3-2 pitch over the fence in left center to tie the game.
UCM answered with three runs on four hits to take the lead for good in the sixth. Jakki Prater had the big blow with an RBI double to left. Kristen Heil and Jessica Neely had RBIs in the inning as well. The Lady Miners had a potential rally in the bottom half of the inning snuffed out when
Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville) lined into a double play.
S&T had six hits in the first game led by Michaelis with two. Fedorchak, Culbertson,
Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) and
Jackie Lybarger (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West) had one each.
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) suffered the loss allowing five runs on nine hits in a complete game effort. She struck out three and walked one.
In the nightcap the Jennies again broke on top with two outs in the first on a two-run homer from Prater. The Lady Miners tied the game in the home half of the first thanks to some small ball.
Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) led off with a single and went to third on an error on Michaelis's bunt. Heil threw the ball into right field on the play. S&T pulled off a double steal for its first run as Davis scored and Michaelis ended up at third on another throwing error.
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) brought home Michaelis with a grounder to first. Lauren Mabe threw to the plate, but Michaelis slid around the tag to tie the game.
UCM answered with three in the second and two more in the third to take a 7-2 lead. Emily King hit a two-run homer off the scoreboard in center and Lindsey Dawson added a run scoring double down the left field line. Both runs the Jennies scored in the third were unearned.
The Lady Miners battled back in the home half of the fourth scoring three runs to pull within 7-5. Strope started the inning with a walk and Lybarger came in to run for her. Culbertson then singled through the left side to put two on with no outs.
Lori Badalamenti (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland ) ripped a double to left center to bring in Lybarger. One batter later Davis singled to center to bring home Culbertson then Michaelis doubled down the left field line to score Badalamenti and put the tying run in scoring position. That would be all S&T got though as Central Missouri brought Prater in to finish the inning retiring Slemp and Baker.
The Jennies scored nine times on seven hits in the fifth inning to break it open. Strope closed out the scoring hit a line drive home run to center in the home half, but it wasn't enough as UCM won the run rule shortened contest.
The Lady Miners finished with eight hits in the nightcap led by Davis and Strope with two apiece.
Bethany Rader (Memphis, Mo./Scotland County ) suffered the loss allowing five runs on six hits in 1.2 innings of work.
S&T is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Rockhurst in a GLVC doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
