Box Score 2 (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners struggled to find their offensive striking out 21 times on Saturday as it was swept by Indianapolis
1-0 and
8-2 at the S&T Softball Field. S&T (3-8, 2-4 GLVC) managed just one hit in the opener before recording seven in the second game, but struggled to get the timely hit.
For the third time in the last four games
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) found herself locked into pitcher's duel with the other team's ace. Strope was able to win the first two of those encounters but was unable to win for a third time as she allowed one run on three hits in seven innings of work. She struck out five and walked one, but her counterpart, Morgan Foley, allowed just one hit in the contest while striking out 17 Lady Miners.
Indianapolis (8-5, 2-0 GLVC) scored the only run of the opening game in the second inning. Jenny Thompson led the frame off with a single through the right side of the infield and advanced to second on a groundout to
Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East). Strope was able to strike out Krysta Bradford and was one pitch away from getting out of the inning but Cori Eckerle tripled in front of a diving
Cassie Rizzo (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) to score Thompson.
S&T had a chance to tie the game in the third. With two outs Rizzo singled through the left side for the Lady Miners only hit.
Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) walked on four pitches putting two on with two out but
Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) struck out swinging to end the threat.
That would be S&T's best chance to score as Foley retired 12 of the final 14 hitters she faced.
In the second game the Lady Miners got behind the eight ball early committing three errors in the opening inning which ultimately led to four runs for the Greyhounds. UIndy added two more in the second on a long home run from Casey Williamson that went over the scoreboard in center.
The Greyhounds added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings on long balls by Taylor Russell and Samantha Krcelich to make it 8-0. S&T got two runs back in the home half of the sixth. With one out
Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville) singled back up the middle and then
Lori Badalamenti (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland ) walked on a 3-2 pitch to put runners at first and second. A passed ball allowed the runners to advance to second and third with two outs.
Jackie Lybarger (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West) would drive both runs home blooping a single in front of the left fielder.
The Lady Miners put two runners on in the seventh, but were robbed of a couple of hits by the UIndy defense and unable to chip away at the lead.
Fedorchak, Davis and Lybarger had two hits apiece for S&T in the nightcap while
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) added the final one.
Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) got the start in game two allowing six runs, two earned, on three hits while striking out two and walking one in 1.2 innings of work.
Bethany Rader (Memphis, Mo./Scotland County ) and
Morgan Imhoff (Jamestown, Mo./Jamestown) pitched the final 5.1 innings allowing just two runs on six hits.
The Lady Miners scheduled doubleheader with Saint Joseph's on Sunday has been canceled due to the weather forecasted and will not be made up. S&T is back at home on Tuesday when it takes on the University of Central Missouri in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
