ROLLA, Mo. –Missouri S&T head football coach
Tyler Fenwick has announced the signing of 14 players to play football for the Miners in the 2014 season. Players can begin signing letters of intent, which binds them to the institution for one year, on Feb. 5 and the period ends on April 1.
The players signed by the Miners to date are as follows:
MILES ARNOLD, a 6-4, 270-pound defensive lineman from West Nassau High School in Callahan, Fla.: Arnold earned all-county honors after the 2013 campaign after recording 37 tackles and three quarterback sacks, as well as two forced fumbles and five pass breakups. He plans to major in mechanical engineering at Missouri S&T.
"Miles is a big, explosive defensive lineman," Fenwick said. "We're very excited to add Miles to our depth on the defensive line."
CHARLES BOURNES, 5-8, 190-pound running back from Morgan Park High School in Chicago, Ill.: Bournes was selected as his team's most valuable player this season and also earned all-city and all-conference honors following the 2013 campaign. Bournes plans to major in biological sciences at Missouri S&T.
"Charles is an electric-type runner with very good speed and quickness," Fenwick said. "He will add a big play-type player to our offense."
DILLON BOWMAN, a 6-0, 210-pound linebacker from Fort Zumwalt South High School in St. Peters, Mo.: Bowman recorded 102 tackles during the 2013 season as well as two interceptions and three tackles for a loss to earn second-team all-conference honors in the Gateway Athletic Conference's Central Division. In addition, he played at quarterback – earning second-team all-GAC Central honors at that position as well -- and led the Bulldogs in rushing with 879 yards and 12 touchdowns last fall. As a junior, Bowman finished with 76 tackles, including six for a loss and had 55 tackles and a pair of interceptions during his sophomore year.
"Dillon is a fast and physical player who played safety and linebacker in high school," Fenwick said. "His athleticism is perfect for our defense."
SETH CARDER, a 5-11, 220-pound linebacker from Wichita (Kan.) Collegiate High School: Carder earned all-state honors as both a linebacker and running back as well as first-team all-conference honors at those positions following a 2013 season where he was selected as his conference's defensive most valuable player. He finished the season with 118 tackles, two sacks and an interception, while also running for 852 yards and 12 touchdowns. As a junior, he had 123 tackles and two interceptions. Carder, who serves as the student body president at Wichita Collegiate, plans to major in petroleum engineering at Missouri S&T.
"Seth brings a fast, physical presence to our linebacker position," Fenwick said. "His speed and quickness is impressive for his stature and I feel he will be a great fit for our defensive philosophy."
LANDON COMPTON, a 6-3, 200-pound safety from Lamar (Mo.) High School: Compton earned all-state honors following the 2013 season as a linebacker for the Missouri Class 2 state champions. He is projected to play at safety at Missouri S&T and plans to major in aerospace engineering.
"Landon is a rangy safety who can cover a lot of ground," Fenwick said. "He will develop into a very good football player for us."
BRAXTON GRAHAM, a 5-9, 165-pound running back from Seneca (Mo.) High School: Graham earned numerous honors after an outstanding senior year for the Indians, topped by being selected first-team all-state at running back and as the Big Eight Conference's "Offensive Player of the Year". He rushed for 2,896 yards and 39 touchdowns on the season, while adding another 789 yards on 42 receptions with 12 touchdowns and over 500 yards in kick returns to finish with a total of 4,202 all-purpose yards. He scored 52 of his 71 career touchdowns last season to help lead Seneca to the Missouri Class 3 championship game. Graham also played on defense, recording 74 tackles and three interceptions to earn first-team all-league honors on that side of the ball. He was also a first-team all-state and all-league selection following his junior year and is a two-time members of the Missouri Football Coaches Association's academic all-state team.
AUSTIN HOLMES, a 6-4, 235-pound defensive lineman from Eagle Point (Ore.) High School: Holmes earned honorable mention all-conference honors following the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Holmes, whose older brother, Tyrone, plays at Portland State, will major in aerospace engineering at Missouri S&T.
"Austin in a very athletic offensive tackle who has the frame to grow into a great player," Fenwick said. "He plays with great technique and has a great football motor as a defensive lineman."
MICHAEL HUTCHCRAFT, a 6-4, 200-pound wide receiver from Sullivan (Ind.) High School: Hutchcraft earned first-team all-state for Indiana Class 2 and all-valley region honors following the 2013 season, when he made 41 receptions for 771 yards and seven touchdowns and also recorded 48 tackles and an interception from the safety position. As a receiver, he was a three-year all-conference performer and set school records for receiving yards in a season and career (1,754) as well as career receptions (133) and touchdowns (19), averaging better than 13 yards per receptions in his three varsity seasons. He will major in mechanical engineering at Missouri S&T.
"Michael is a big, strong receiver that runs well for his size," Fenwick said. "He has great hands and comes up with some difficult catches. He creates matchup problems for defenses and will be a great fit in our offense."
MITCH LAUDER, a 5-11, 200-pound linebacker from Carbondale (Ill.) High School: Lauder, a first-team all-state selection in Illinois as a junior and senior and also an all-state academic team member, recorded 92 tackles during his senior year which included 14 stops for a loss, as well as four forced fumbles and two interceptions. He served as his team's defensive captain during the 2013 season and also played at running back on the offensive side of the ball. Lauder plans to major in petroleum engineering at Missouri S&T.
"Mitch is a very physical football player," Fenwick said. "He is extremely active on the field and has a nose for the football."
GABE MARCANTONIO, a 6-3, 200-pound safety from Jefferson City (Mo.) High School: Marcantonio earned second-team all-state honors as an athlete and as punter in Missouri Class 6 following the 2013 season, when he played at quarterback, safety, kicker and punter for the Jays. He produced the bulk of his high school numbers on the offensive side of the ball, where he had 852 career rushing yards and 12 touchdowns, while completing just over 50 percent of his passes for 1,136 yards and nine scores. In the secondary, he had four career interceptions and was in on 50 tackles during his junior year. He earned three varsity letters at Jefferson City and is a member of the school's branch of the National Honor Society. He will major in engineering at Missouri S&T.
"Gabe played quarterback at Jefferson City and is a very good athlete," Fenwick said. "He is rangy and will be a nice addition to our secondary."
HAYDEN MILLS, a 6-0, 190-pound safety from Central High School in Little Rock, Ark.: Mills was a first-team selection to the ArkansasVarsity.com all-senior team heading into the 2013 season. He recorded 45 tackles as a junior with three pass breakups and 59 in his sophomore season. His high school team reached the state playoffs last fall and upended two-time defending state champion Fayetteville in the opening round. Mills plans to major in petroleum engineering at Missouri S&T.
"Hayden is a versatile safety with great athleticism," Fenwick said. "He covers a lot of ground in the secondary and is a very good tackler."
SAM SYKORA, a 6-1, 190-pound quarterback from St. Louis (Mo.) University High School: Sykora earned second-team all-conference honors in the Metro Catholic Conference following the 2013 season, when he completed 111-of-205 passes for 1,548 yards and 14 touchdowns. As a junior, he threw for 575 yards and four scores.
"Sam is a well-polished quarterback that is extremely accurate and has a very good knowledge of the game," Fenwick said.
LAMAR WILKES, a 6-0, 170-pound quarterback from Pattonville High School in Maryland Heights, Mo.: Wilkes was named as the Pirates' most valuable player following the 2013 season, one where he was also named to the Suburban North Conference's all-league team as an honorable mention selection. He completed 137-of-270 passes for 2,048 yards and 16 touchdowns last fall after throwing for 723 yards and four scores during his junior year. Wilkes, who also ran for 430 yards in 2013, plans to major in biological sciences at Missouri S&T.
"Lamar is an extremely dynamic dual threat quarterback who can run and throw the fooball," Fenwick said. "He adds a new dimension to our offense."
SHAUN WILLIAMS, a 5-10, 170-pound defensive back from DeSmet Jesuit High School in St. Louis, Mo.: Williams finished the 2013 season with 25 tackles and two interceptions at cornerback, after recording 18 tackles and an interception during his junior year. He was a second-team all-conference selection in the Metro Catholic Conference at defensive back following the 2013 campaign. In addition, Williams was an outstanding kick returner for the Spartans, averaging 22.8 yards per kickoff runback and 18.4 yards per punt return last fall. He will major in mechanical engineering at Missouri S&T.
"Shaun is a talented corner with very good ball skills," Fenwick said. "He is also a player who will really help us on special teams, especially in the return game."
