ROLLA, Mo. – Controlling matters on both sides of the line of scrimmage, Indianapolis handed Missouri S&T its fourth straight loss Saturday with a
30-12 Great Lakes Valley Conference win at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
The Greyhounds – who clinched their third straight outright GLVC title with Saturday's win – held a two-to-one advantage in time of possession and outgained the Miners by over 300 yards to win their 22
nd straight conference contest.
After the two teams traded punts over the first six minutes of the contest, the Greyhounds grabbed the lead on their second possession. Two plays after Connor Barthel connected with Kevin Teglia for a 55-yard pass play to put UIndy on the Miners' two-yard line, Matt Ripp scored to put the Greyhounds on top. UIndy then extended its lead early in the second quarter on a five-yard scoring pass from Barthel to Alex Kimack.
The Miners did not run a play in Greyhound territory until under five minutes remained in the first half, after
Spencer Elrod (Lancaster, Calif.)'s 14-yard gain on a reverse. That Miner drive stalled three plays later and the game went to halftime at 14-0.
The Greyhounds scored on their opening possession of the second half with a 10-play, 65-yard drive that culminated in a 14-yard touchdown run by Ripp. Barthel, however, threw interceptions on each of the next two UIndy possessions and the second one led to the Miners' first score of the game.
Will Brown (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood West) picked off an errant Barthel pass and returned it to near midfield, but the Miners had to give the ball back to the Greyhounds after a bad snap on a punt led to punter
Austin Dussold (Farmington, Mo./Farmington) trying to run for, but coming up short of a first down. But after a personal foul penalty at the end of the play backed the Greyhounds up 15 yards, Brown wrestled a Barthel pass away from Reece Horn and returned the interception 40 yards to the UIndy three-yard line.
Charles Bournes (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) went into the end zone on the next play to cut the Greyhound lead to 21-6.
However, a pair of Scott Miller field goals – one from 35 yards and the other from 39 – moved the advantage back to 21 before the Miners had their only sustained drive of the second half that also led to points.
Following an 11-yard run by
Chris Kennard (Plano, Texas/Parish Episcopal) to start the drive,
Peter Simpson (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) had a completion of 19 yards to
Ben Matthews (Platte City, Mo./Platte County) and a run of 12 yards to move well into UIndy territory. A face mask penalty on the Greyhounds after a completion to
Leon Moody (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit HS) got the Miners to the 11, then a couple of plays later, Simpson threw a seven-yard scoring pass to Moody to bring S&T back to within two scores.
The Greyhounds would answer by putting the finishing touches on the win by chewing up nearly five and one-half minutes off the clock on a drive that ended with Miller's third field goal of the game with 5:41 to go from 33 yards away.
Missouri S&T finished the contest with just 158 yards of total offense to the 494 for the Greyhounds. Simpson and
Lamar Wilkes (Maryland Heights, Mo./Pattonville) combined to complete 11-of-25 passes for 63 yards, while the Miners had 95 yards on the ground, led by Kennard's 37.
Brown's two interceptions – the only two turnovers in the game -- gives him a league-high six this season, while
Dawan Ferguson (St. Louis, Mo./Riverview Gardens),
Chris McKay (Flint, Mich./Carman-Ainsworth HS) and
Nick Kruse (Cuba, Mo./Cuba HS) all finished with ten tackles apiece. The Greyhounds had the ball for 40:05 in the contest.
Missouri S&T, who fell to 3-7 overall and 2-5 in the GLVC, will close its 2014 season next Saturday when it hosts Lincoln (2-8, 1-6 GLVC) in a 1 p.m. game at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. Next Saturday's game will be Military Appreciation Day at S&T and the Miner seniors will also be honored prior to the contest.
