Fast start carries Lady Miners to 86-71 victory

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T started fast and didn't look back in its 86-71 win over Hannibal-LaGrange on Tuesday evening. The Lady Miners (2-0) scored four seconds into the game and raced out to a 12-1 lead. They never trailed in the contest.

S&T dominated the first 15 minutes of the opening frame shooting over 70 percent for a majority of it in building its largest lead of the night at 39-20 on layup by Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) with 5:19 to play in the stanza.

The Trojans (0-2) used an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 13 with less than four minutes to play in the half, but the Lady Miners countered with a 7-2 run of its own to push the margin back to 18 on layup by Sandra Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy).

Hannibal-LaGrange refused to go quietly answering with 10 straight points cutting the deficit to eight points with 0:42 left in the half. S&T went into the intermission with a 10-point cushion thanks to a bucket by Kimberly Runge (Freedom, Wis./Freedom) with 0:26 left in the half.

The Lady Miners shot 64 percent from the floor in the opening frame and outrebounded their guests by a 15-12 margin. Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) led S&T with 11 points while Linda Pagrode (Jaunolaine, Latvia/Riga 99) dropped in nine. S. Douvier, Runge and Leigh-Ann Kesper (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) added six points each.

After a cold start the Trojans warmed up to finish the half shooting 52 percent and were led in scoring by Ashleigh Hurd-Spencer with 16 points while Morgan Winkler added eight points.
Hannibal-LaGrange cut the Lady Miner lead to single digits early in the second half but that would be the last time as S&T broke the game open with a 17-8 run behind eight points from S. Douvier.

The Lady Miners led by as many as 19 in the second half and coasted to the 15-point victory. S&T's bench outscored the Trojans 40-15 and dominated in the paint outscoring their guests 44-26.

The Lady Miners finished the game with four players in double figures led by Greenwood with 18 matching her career-high she set on Saturday. S. Douvier dropped home 16, Leigh-Ann Kesper (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) added 11 and Joe'l Bland (St. Charles, Mo./Homeschooled) contributed 10 to the attack. J. Douvier finished with 10 rebounds while Greenwood, Bland and Pagrode had four assists each.

S&T shot 52 percent from the floor in the second half and finished the game connecting on 36 of its 62 shots (58.1 percent). It was just 3-for-10 from three and made just 61 percent of its foul shots. It outrebounded Hannibal-LaGrange 36-28 and turned 20 Trojan turnovers into 18 points.

Hannibal-LaGrange finished the game shooting 44 percent from the floor but was just 9-of-26 in the second half. It stayed in the game thanks to shooting 21 free throws in the second half and made 13 of them.  It was 3-for-9 from beyond the arc.

Hurd-Spencer led all scorers with 25 points while Winkler finished with 18 and Emma Penn had eight off the bench.

The Lady Miners are back in action on Friday evening hosting LeMoyne-Owen College in the Lady Miner Classic at 7:30 p.m. Newman and Central Missouri will play the first game on Friday beginning at 5:30 p.m.
