ROLLA, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Miner volleyball team will face a familiar foe when it takes part in its fourth straight GLVC Tournament on Thursday afternoon in the Lewis Flyers. This marks the third time the two sides have met in the conference tournament over the last four years.
The Flyers won the first two meetings in the conference tournament defeating S&T 3-1 back in 2011 and then rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Miners in five sets in 2012. Thursday's match will also have implications for the NCAA Midwest Regional rankings as well as the Miners are seeded sixth in the rankings while the Flyers are seventh. The top eight teams in the rankings will be announced on Sunday evening at 9 p.m. and those teams will advance to the NCAA Midwest Regional Nov. 21-23.
S&T Athletics will be hosting a selection show watch party this Sunday evening beginning at 8:30 p.m. in the Hall of Fame inside the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. Drinks and snacks will be provided. Everyone is welcome to attend.
S&T, the third seed in the West Division, enters the postseason having five of its last six with the only loss coming to Rockhurst last Friday. The Miners defeated the Flyers in Romeoville nine days ago with a 3-1 victory getting 16 kills from
Alison Mueller (Bartelso, Ill./Mater Dei ) while
Jackie Zellmer (Nixa, Mo./Nixa) added 10 and
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) had nine.
Haslag continues to lead the S&T attack averaging 2.69 kills and 1.09 blocks per set and is hitting .326 for the season. She ranks amongst the GLVC leaders in kills, hitting percentage and blocking.
Lewis, the second seed in the East Division, is 22-6 and went 14-4 this year in league action. The Flyers rebounded from their loss to S&T by defeating Illinois Springfield in straight sets last Friday and then had to hold on to beat McKendree in five sets.
Lewis leads the GLVC in kills averaging 14.16 per set and is second in attack percentage (.252) and assists with 13.13/set. Alexis Davito leads the Flyer attack averaging 3.61 kills and has an attack percentage of .301. Kim Vertin is second on the squad averaging 2.59 kills/set while Morgan Cebula and Aly Schneider are averaging 2.53 and 2.51 kills per set. Leigh Barea runs the Lewis offense distributing 11.45 assists/set while Amy Choi is the leader on the defensive side of the ball digging up 5.42 per set.
The Flyers lead the all-time series with the Miners 7-2, but the two sides have split the last four meetings.
