Lady Miners score early then hold off Tritons to get back in win column

(Rolla, Mo.) – After not scoring in nearly 200 minutes the Missouri S&T Lady Miners wasted little time getting on the scoreboard against Missouri-St. Louis on Friday evening in Rolla. Sabrina Hostler (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy)'s goal in the third minute was all S&T would need as it withstood a furious Triton rally to win 1-0 and win its third contest of the season.

The Lady Miners (3-6, 3-4 GLVC) came out attacking and were rewarded in the opening moments when Julie Bride (Stilwell, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) won a ball on the wing, went around her defender and crossed the ball to Hostler in the middle of the box. Hostler was able to navigate through traffic and fired one a low liner into the right corner from 10 yards away for her fourth tally of the season. Hostler had a couple of other opportunities but sent one wide of the post and headed another one right to the keeper.

S&T outshot Missouri-St. Louis (5-4, 3-4 GLVC) 5-2 in the opening half and put three of those shots on goal. The Lady Miners also had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Tritons flipped the script in the second half applying pressure in the S&T end looking for the equalizer but Kaitlyn Deister (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) was up to the task as she made six saves in the frame to preserve the lead and earn her third shutout of the season. Deister's biggest save of the night came in the 82nd minute when she stopped Sidney Allen from point-blank range after Allen had gotten behind the defense.

Hostler nearly gave the Lady Miners a two goal lead in the 79th minute trying to head home a corner kick from Kendall Fitzpatrick (Houston, Texas/Memorial ), but sailed it over the bar.

UMSL's last opportunity for the equalizer was in the 88th minute when Allen attempted a shot but it was blocked by the S&T defense.

The Tritons outshot S&T 9-4 in the second half and finished the game with an 11-9 advantage in shots and 8-4 in shots on goal.

The Lady Miners are back at home on Sunday when they take on Maryville at 12 p.m., at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
