(Springfield, Mo.) – Missouri S&T rallied from a 2-1 deficit and were down by four points in the fourth set, but was able to rally to defeat Drury
3-2 on Wednesday evening at the O'Reilly Family Events Center in Springfield, Mo. S&T (14-11, 9-5 GLVC) used a balanced attack to complete the comeback with three players recording double digit kill totals.
The Miners trailed for a majority of the opening set, but came back to take a 17-16 lead after a Drury (14-9, 5-9 GLVC) attack error. It would be S&T's last lead of the set as the Panthers ran off four straight to regain the lead. The Miners cut the deficit to 20-19 on a kill by
Allie Plunk (Hurst, Texas/Birdville) then Plunk and
Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) teamed up to stuff Laynie Timmons at the net.
Drury responded scoring three of the next four points to grab a 23-20 lead. S&T cut the deficit to one but were unable to get over the hump as kills by BJ Specht and Brooke Antenen gave the opener to the Panthers with back-to-back kills.
In the second set the Miners raced out of the gate scoring four of the first five points only to watch Drury counter with a 5-1 run to take the lead. S&T regained the momentum scoring seven of the next nine points to take a 12-8 lead capped by an
Alison Mueller (Bartelso, Ill./Mater Dei ) kill. The Miners stretched their lead to five only to see the Panthers claw back to within 17-15 on a kill by Sara Borneman.
S&T extended its lead back to four only to allow Drury to get within 22-20 after an error by
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ). That would be the closest Drury got however as the Miners closed out the set with three straight points to even the match.
S&T stormed out of the gates in the third set scoring nine of the first 13 points but were unable to maintain the lead as the Panthers hit them with a 13-3 run to take a 17-12 advantage on a kill by Mina House. The Miners closed the margin to two points on three different occasions but were never able to get over the hump as Drury hung on for a 25-22 win.
S&T got off to a slow start in the fourth set falling behind 4-2 and trailed for a majority of the frame. The Panthers led 20-17 and had all the momentum in the match when the Miners hit them with haymaker going on a 6-0 run to grab a 23-20 lead. It was a lead they wouldn't relinquish winning 25-22 to force the winner take all fifth set.
S&T fell behind early in the deciding set, but answered by scoring five straight points to grab a 6-2 lead. The Panthers chipped away at the lead to get within 6-5 and forced the Miners to take a timeout. Out of the break S&T ran off three straight points to push its lead back to four. Borneman kept Drury in the match with back-to-back kills, but the Miners were too much down the stretch outscoring the Panthers 6-3 to win 15-10. S&T registered just four kills in the final stanza, but took advantage of 11 Drury attack errors.
The Miners finished the match with a hitting percentage of .146 recording 58 kills against 28 errors in 205 chances. Moon and Mueller paced the S&T attack with 14 kills apiece while Haslag added 11 kills.
Allie Plunk (Hurst, Texas/Birdville) finished the match two kills shy of a triple-double with eight kills, 44 assists and had a team-high 27 digs.
The Panthers registered 61 kills in the contest, but committed 38 errors in 218 attempts to finish the match with a hitting percentage of .106. Specht finished with a match high 15 kills while Borneman added 10. Antenen led Drury with 47 assists while Bridget Justis had a match high 31 digs.
The Miners continue their road trip on Saturday when they head north to take on Wisconsin-Parkside at 5 p.m.
