Bellarmine's late goal sends Miners to 1-0 setback

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A late goal allowed Bellarmine to break a string of scoreless minutes recorded by Missouri S&T's men's soccer team and also come away with a win Sunday afternoon, as the Knights topped the Miners 1-0 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest.

The Knights got the only goal of the game in the 82nd minute when Zach Digan headed in a corner kick from Dan Schiavi.  That tally ended a run of 281 minutes without a goal being allowed by S&T's defense.

S&T was held without a shot on goal in the first half of play – the Knights had a 7-2 advantage in shots overall – but created some opportunities in the opening moments of the second half.  The Miners got a pair of shots shortly after the second half started, then had three corner kicks in the span of a minute but were unable to get a shot from any of those attempts.

Neil Wiaranowski (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) had the Miners' first shot on net in the 68th minute that was stopped by Knight goalkeeper Blake Hunter.

S&T goalkeeper James Holloway (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame Regional), who had four saves in the contest, stopped a head ball attempt by Kai Qualah with 20 minutes to play to keep the game scoreless and made another stop on a shot on goal a little over eight minutes later.

After the Knights took the lead, the Miners had two chances to tie the contest.  The first came in the 87th minute when Wiaranowski got his head on Ryan Lawhead (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township)'s corner kick, but the ball went over the top of the goal.  Then after a Bellarmine foul in the final minute that gave S&T a free kick, Maxi Fuchs (Munich, Germany)' attempt was stopped by Hunter.

Bellarmine had a 14-9 advantage in shots for the game after each team recorded seven in the second half.

The Miners will play three of their next four games at home, beginning with Friday's 7:30 p.m. match with Illinois Springfield at the S&T Soccer Field.
