Miners upset bid comes up short against Truman State

(Rolla, Mo.) – Missouri S&T's attempt at upset came up short in its 3-1 (16-25, 25-20, 24-26, 19-25) loss against Truman State on Saturday afternoon in Rolla. The Miners had no answer defensively for the Bulldogs' Jasmine Brown who finished the match with a career-high 26 kills.

Truman (15-2, 11-0) began the match with six straight points behind three kills from Brown. S&T (10-8, 7-4 GLVC) steadied the ship and eventually closed to within 10-8 on a service ace from Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood). That would be the closest the Miners got though as the Bulldogs ran off four straight points to push the lead back to six. S&T would cut it to four on a couple of occasions, but every time they did Truman had an answer in cruising to the nine-point win.

In the second set the Miners flipped the tables on the Bulldogs racing out to a 3-0 lead and wouldn't be caught leading by as many as seven points in the frame. Truman cut to three points late, but S&T held firm evening the match on a service from Emily Jaeger (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy). Moon and Katie McDonald (Orland Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) paced the offense in the second stanza with three kills apiece.

The third set was the tightest of the four sets featuring 11 ties and five lead changes. After opening the set with two straight points the Miners allowed the Bulldogs to score the next five. S&T battled back tying it at 8-8 only to see Truman score four of the next five points to take a 12-9 lead. The Miners continued to hang tough and eventually retook the lead on a kill from Moon to make it 18-17. Alison Mueller (Bartelso, Ill./Mater Dei ) followed with another kill to stretch the lead to two. The Bulldogs answered scoring five of the next six points to take a 22-20 lead on a kill from Meghan Zimmerman.

S&T refused to go quietly coming back to tie it at 24-all, but couldn't quite get over the hump as Truman scored the final two points to win the set and take the 2-1 lead.

The Miners took an early lead in set four but were unable to maintain it as the Bulldogs stormed back with an 8-3 run to take a 10-7 lead. The lead continued to hold at three points before
S&T ran off three straight to even the set up at 16. Truman broke the tie with a kill from Brown sparking a 3-1 run and the Miners wouldn't get closer than two points the rest of the way with Truman ending the match on a 9-3 run.

S&T finished the match with 55 kills, but committed 27 errors in 191 attempts to hit .147 for the match. Moon led the Miners with 12 kills while McDonald and Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) had nine kills each. Allie Plunk (Hurst, Texas/Birdville) dished out 25 assists and Caitlin Brocker (Crystal Lake, Ill./Marian Central ) had 21 digs.

The Bulldogs hit .242 percent for the contest finishing with 62 kills against 17 errors in 186 swings. Brown led the way for Truman with her 26 kills while Abby Heise had 13 kills. Zimmerman dished out 43 assists and had 19 digs along with Abby Moser.
