(Rolla, Mo.) – After losing the opening set 25-19 and trailing the second set 17-10 the Missouri S&T Miners needed to regroup and regroup they did storming back to win the second set 26-24 and then won the next two defeat Drury
3-1 (19-25, 26-24, 25-21, 25-19) on Tuesday night. The night also marked the 100
th win of the program and for head coach
Jason Holt.
S&T (8-6, 5-2 GLVC) struggled to get its offense going in the opening set finishing with a hitting percentage of zero. At one point the Miners had recorded only three kills while making seven errors. Drury (8-4, 3-4 GLVC) led for a majority of the opening set and finished with 16 kills to hit .256 percent.
After calling its second timeout in set two S&T used a 14-4 run to gain three set points, but had a tough time putting the Panthers away as they scored three straight points to even the set. The Miners wouldn't be denied though as
Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) and
Katie McDonald (Orland Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) stuffed Dakota Santore at the net to put S&T back in front 25-24 and then on the next swing Moon blocked Laynie Timmons to give the Miners the win and send the clubs into the break tied at 1-1.
S&T flipped the tables on Drury in the third set racing out to an early six point lead and wouldn't look back on its way to the 25-21 win. The Miners registered 16 kills against only two errors in 40 swings to hit .350 in the frame. The duo of
Jackie Pyles (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield) and
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) combined for 10 of the 16 kills in the stanza and hit .500 percent.
In the fourth set the Panthers took the early lead and held onto it for the opening half of the frame trying to force a fifth set. With S&T trailing 13-11, Haslag recorded a kill sparking a 7-1 run allowing the Miners to take the lead for good. Drury would get as close as 20-18 on a kill from Mina House, but that was the closest it would get as S&T finished it off by scoring five of the last six points to pick up the win.
After its slow start the Miners had a hitting percentage of .348 recording 51 kills against 12 errors in 112 swings to finish the match with a hitting percentage of .262. Pyles had a match-high 19 kills while Haslag added 15. Moon contributed seven kills and had four total blocks.
Allie Plunk (Hurst, Texas/Birdville) had 47 assists and 19 digs while
Emily Jaeger (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) added 17 digs.
The Panthers finished the contest with 59 kills with a hitting percentage of .229 and were led by Santore with 15 kills while BJ Specht added 12 kills. Brooke Antenen dished out 44 assists while Specht had 15 digs.
S&T is back in action on Friday when it travels to St. Louis, Mo., to take on the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons at 7 p.m.
