S&T can’t slow down Greyhounds

Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners were unable to slow down the Indianapolis Greyhounds on Friday night in an 81-57 defeat at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. The Greyhounds bench was the story of the game scoring 46 of the 81 points in the contest.

The Lady Miners (4-6, 0-2 GLVC) hung with the 'Hounds (10-2, 1-0 GLVC) for the first eight-plus minutes of the contest trailing by just five at the 11:37 mark. S&T started the contest making 3 of its first 4 field goals before making just 2 of their next 18 shots and were held without a field goal for more than seven minutes and found themselves trailing 28-17 with less than five minutes to play in the half. A pair of three's from Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) cut the deficit to seven with 3:11 left in the stanza, but UIndy finished the half scoring 10 of the last 12 points to take a 40-25 lead into the locker room.

The Lady Miners shot 33 percent (11-for-33) from the field in the frame, was 2-of-9 from three and 1-for-2 at the charity stripe. They were outrebounded by a 21-to-19 margin, but couldn't overcome a 20-4 deficit in bench points. Knar led the way with eight points while Kylie Cooper (Andover, Kan./Andover) dropped in six and Karli Sample (St. Joseph, Mo./Benton) added five.

The Greyhounds heated up after a slow start to shoot 49 percent (16-for-33) from the field, was 5-of-15 from three and 3-for-5 at the foul line. Erin Murphy had seven to lead the 'Hounds while Princess German and Rose Savela had six points apiece.

S&T started the second half scoring five straight points to cut the margin to 10, but wouldn't get any closer as Indianapolis countered with a 13-4 run to build a 19-point lead just over five minutes into the second half. The lead eventually grew 29 points with just over three minutes to play before the Lady Miners finished the game scoring eight of the final 11 points.

Knar finished with 20 a game-high 20 points and knocked down six three-pointers which was one off from tying the school record which she has matched twice. She scored 12 points in the second half. Sample finished with a double-double scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Cooper finished with nine points and seven rebounds. S&T shot just 31 percent for the game and 32 percent from three.

Indianapolis had four players reach double figures in scoring led by Shelby Wall and Eliza Wortman with 14 each. Murphy added 11 while German dropped home 10. The Greyhounds finished the game shooting 48 percent from the floor and 36 percent from beyond the arc.

S&T is back in action on Sunday afternoon when it takes on Saint Joseph's College beginning at 1 p.m.
