Box Score (Pensacola, Fla.) – The Missouri S&T Miners had its two match winning streak snapped by the fourth ranked Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs
3-0 (18-25, 20-25, 12-25) on Saturday evening in Pensacola, Fla.
S&T (2-2) fell behind by five early, but rallied to within a point in the opening set. The Bulldogs (4-0) answered back scoring six of the next eight points to push the lead back to five. The Miners wouldn't get closer than four points the rest of the set. S&T had a hard time stopping the trio of Katie Ledwell, Kate Lange and Sydnie Mauch as they combined for 11 of the team's 13 kills in the opening frame. The Miners had a difficult getting their own offense going hitting just 10.0 percent in the stanza.
The second set was the tightest of the match featuring 10 ties and seven lead changes. S&T held a 19-17 lead, but after a Duluth timeout the Bulldogs scored eight of the final nine points to take the set 25-20. Lange had a pair of kills in the run to go along with one for Ledwell. The Miners held UMD to a hitting percentage of 17.1 percent, but were held to 8.6 percent themselves.
The third set was all Bulldogs as they scored the first eight points of the set and led by as many as 14 points. Duluth hit 44 percent in the final frame and had 15 kills. Monica Turner led the way with four while Ledwell and Mauch had three apiece.
Alison Mueller (Bartelso, Ill./Mater Dei ) and
Shelby Wagner (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit) had two kills apiece in the final set for S&T.
The Miners finished the contest recording 28 kills in 94 attempts hitting just 6.4 percent for the contest.
Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) led the way with seven kills while Mueller added six.
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) and
Claire Luther (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) dropped home five kills each.
Ciara Sebelius (Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada/Westwood Collegiate Inst.) had 12 assists while
Cydney Denning (San Antonio, Texas/Brandeis ) finished with 14 digs.
As a result of her strong play over the weekend Haslag was named to the all-tournament team. She averaged 2.88 kills per set and hit 34 percent for the weekend. She also had a service ace and averaged 1.12 blocks per set.
The Bulldogs were led by Lange with 11 kills and Ledwell with 10. Ashley Hinsch distributed 29 assists while Julie Rainey had 14 digs. As a team UMD had 42 kills in 102 chances finishing with a 26.5 hitting percentage.
S&T returns to action next Friday when it travels to Florence, Ala., to take on Christian Brothers University beginning at 2 p.m. The Miners will also take on Rollins College that evening at 8 p.m., and then play two more on Saturday against North Alabama and Harding University.
