Box Score (Pensacola, Fla.) – The Missouri S&T Miners got a career day from
Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) in its
3-1 (24-26, 25-16, 25-17, 25-9) win over Arkansas-Monticello to earn its first win of the 2013 season on Friday. Wright finished with a match-high 14 kills and a career-high six service aces to pace S&T.
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) added 13 kills while
Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) contributed nine kills to the attack.
The Miners (1-1) allowed the Cotton Blossoms (1-1) to hit 21.2 percent in the opening set, but after that the defense tightened up holding UAM to a negative 10 percent over the last three sets. S&T on the other hand hit only 10.3 percent in the opening frame, but grew stronger as the match wore on to finish at nearly 19 percent.
The opening set was a back-and-forth affair with 10 ties and four lead changes. The Blossoms held the lead for the majority of the set, but couldn't shake the Miners. UAM held a 24-22, but saw S&T rally to tie the frame before winning it with back-to-back points. Wright and Moon combined for 10 of the team's 15 kills in the stanza.
The Blossoms led 7-5 in the second set, before the Miners used a 10-2 run to take the lead for good. S&T took advantage of five errors during the run. Monticello wouldn't get closer than four points the rest of the set as the Miners led by as many as nine. Haslag and
Alison Mueller (Bartelso, Ill./Mater Dei ) each had three kills to lead the Miners.
The third set was tied 16-all when Wright pounded home a kill sparking an 8-0 run allowing S&T to cruise to a 25-17 win and take a 2-1 lead. Haslag had five kills in the set while Wright added four more. As a team the Miners hit 23 percent in the third frame.
The fourth set was all S&T as it raced out to a 6-0 lead. The Blossoms closed to within two, but the Miners dominated the remainder of the set outscoring UAM 19-4 the rest of the way. Wright had four kills and a pair of aces to lead the charge while Haslag added three more. Defensively S&T held the Blossoms to just one kill in 22 chances while forcing them to commit eight errors.
Allie Plunk (Hurst, Texas/Birdville) finished the match with 31 assists while
Cydney Denning (San Antonio, Texas/Brandeis ) dug up 19 balls off the floor.
The Miners take on Northern Michigan at 2 p.m. and fourth-ranked Minnesota Duluth at 7 p.m. to conclude the West Florida Opening Weekend Tournament.
