S&T drops heartbreaker in double OT to Southern Indiana 2-1

Box Score (Evansville, Ind.) – For the second time in three games the Missouri S&T Lady Miners went to double overtime, but this time fell to Southern Indiana 2-1 on a goal two minutes into the second extra frame. The Screaming Eagles outshot the Lady Miners 17-12, 8-6 in shots on goal.

The game was scoreless until the 61st minute when USI's (4-0-1, 2-0-1 GLVC) Natalie Geiger scored off a pass from Leslie Schapker for second goal of the season. S&T (0-2-1, 0-2-1 GLVC) got the equalizer just over nine minutes later when Catherine Hawn (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) scored off a free kick from the left side. Hawn's goal was the first one scored by the Lady Miners in Evansville since Oct. 21, 2007.

S&T had a pair of chances in the 74th minute on a shot by Anna Fink (Fulton, Mo./Fulton) which was saved and in the 82nd minute on a shot by Kimberly Ekholm (Houston, Texas/Cy-Springs ) which was also turned away.  The Screaming Eagles had a chance for the winner in the 85th minute, but Shelby Tarantino was turned away by Madison Gibler (Kansas City, Mo./Staley). Ekholm had another chance in the final minute of regulation, but her header attempt was high.

USI controlled play for much of the overtime period outshooting the Lady Miners 6-1 and put four of those on goal. Gibler made two saves in the first OT frame and one in the second. The Screaming Eagles scored the game winner when Schapker put home a cross from Madi Vellkey in the 102nd minute.

Hawn finished the game with five of S&T's 12 shots; three of them were on goal. Gibler faced 17 shots in the contest and made six saves.

The Lady Miners are back in action on Sunday afternoon taking on the Prairie Stars of Illinois Springfield in Springfield, Ill., beginning at 12 p.m.
