Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners battled hard for 90 minutes against the 13th ranked Cardinals of William Jewell but came up on the short end of a 2-1 decision on Sunday at the S&T Soccer Field. The Lady Miners outshot the Cardinals 12-11 and 6-4 in shots on goal.

The game was scoreless through the first 40 minutes before WJC (4-0-0, 2-0-0 GLVC) broke on top with a goal in the 42nd minute. Emily Monroe tried to cross a ball into the box, but had it blocked. She ran down the ball on the end line and crossed into the six-yard box to Sydney White who tapped into the open net. The Cardinals outshot S&T (0-1-1, 0-1-1 GLVC) in the frame 5-4 and had two shots on goal. The Lady Miners had the edge in corner kicks 5-1.

The Lady Miners got the equalizer 1:35 into the second half. Kimberly Ekholm (Houston, Texas/Cy-Springs ) played a ball up to Catherine Hawn (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo). Hawn beat a defender then fired a cross into the six-yard box towards goal. Sarah Hostler (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) was there in front and she tapped it in for her first collegiate goal. Hostler had another chance in the 50th minute, but was denied. Sammy Minea (Leawood, Kan./Blue Valley North ) had a chance as well in the 60th but was turned away too.

The Cardinals scored the game winner in the 70th minute. Leah Connery played a ball through to Sarah Franklin. Franklin then sent a pass through the Lady Miner defense to Ashley Licata. Licata ran onto and beat Kaitlyn Deister (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) on a shot from the top of the box.

S&T had two great chances to tie the game. Sammy Minea (Leawood, Kan./Blue Valley North ) nearly redirected a free kick off her knee, but the keeper made a diving save. In the 84th minute Kelsey Salzman (Blue Springs, Mo./Notre Dame de Sion) ripped a shot from the edge of the box that looked targeted for low inside the far post, but once again the keeper got just enough of it to force it wide.

The Lady Miners outshot William Jewell 8-6 in the second half and 6-2 in shots on goal.

S&T heads back out on the road this week traveling to Evansville, Ind., to take on Southern Indiana on Friday evening beginning at 5 p.m.
