Box Score (Kansas City, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T women's soccer team opened its 2013 season on Friday night playing to a
0-0 draw in double overtime against Rockhurst in Kansas City. It was the first point that S&T has picked up at Rockhurst since winning 5-1 back in 2000.
Rockhurst (1-0-1, 0-0-1 GLVC) controlled play for most of the first half outshooting the Lady Miners (0-0-1, 0-0-1 GLVC) 5-3 and put four of those on goal.
Madison Gibler (Kansas City, Mo./Staley) made four big saves in the opening 45 minutes including deflecting a couple of shots wide that looked to be headed for goal.
Kimberly Ekholm (Houston, Texas/Cy-Springs ) had the best chance to score for S&T heading one off the crossbar in the 12
th minute.
The Hawks continued applying pressure in the second half, but once again the Lady Miner defense stood tall forcing Rockhurst to take a lot of shots from outside the 18-yard box. Ekholm had a chance to win the game in the 83
rd minute when a loose ball bounced to her inside the penalty box, but she couldn't quite get enough of it and it went straight to the keeper.
Neither side had a shot on goal in the first overtime period, but the Hawks did put two shots on goal in the second OT. Gibler came up huge again making both saves.
Rockhurst finished the contest outshooting S&T 18-5, 8-1 in shots on goal and had the edge in corner kicks at 5-1.
The Lady Miners open the home portion of their schedule on Sunday playing host to William Jewell beginning at 12 p.m.
