Lady Miners have three players earn All-GLVC Honors; Smith Earns Academic All-District Accolades

EAST PEORIA, Ill. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miner softball team had three members earn All-GLVC honors for the 2013 season as announced at the Great Lakes Valley Conference on Thursday. Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) and Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) were named to the All-GLVC West Division First Team while Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) was named to the All-GLVC West Division Second Team.

Smith, a senior from Blue Springs, Mo., earned the first team at nod at catcher hitting .385 with nine home runs and 32 runs batted in. She caught all but 18 innings behind the plate this season and threw out 12 runners trying to steal and picked off four others. Smith finishes her career with a batting average of .341 which is sixth highest in school history. She is third all-time in home runs (24), fourth in RBIs with 100 and fifth in doubles with 32.

In addition, Smith was named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District First Team for Region Four on Thursday afternoon. The all-district team was selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). She is now eligible for selection to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American Team. To be eligible for nomination to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Team, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average.

Strope, a sophomore from Edwardsville, Ill., was selected to the first team squad as a pitcher. She finished the season with a record of 6-5 and had an earned-run average of 1.67. She appeared in 27 games with 12 starts, nine complete games and three shutouts. Strope also had two saves on the year. She struck out 88 hitters in 117.1 innings pitched and only yielded 38 walks. Opponents hit just .243 off of her.

Davis, a freshman from Blue Springs, Mo., was named to the second team as a utility player. She had the second highest batting average on the team at .343 recording 37 hits in 108 at-bats while scoring 19 runs. She had two doubles and drove in eight runs on the season while swiping 14 bases in 15 attempts.

The Lady Miners finished their 2013 season with a record of 13-25, 12-20 in league play.
