Box Score 2 LIBERTY, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners were held to four runs and nine hits on Tuesday as it dropped both ends of a doubleheader at William Jewell
5-2 and
4-2.
Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) had three of the hits, all for extra bases, in the games.
S&T (8-15, 7-10 GLVC) got two on with two out in the first inning of the opener thanks to a pair of walks, but couldn't cash in on them. The Lady Miners didn't get another runner on base until Slemp doubled with two outs in the sixth inning. After the two walks in the first inning, William Jewell's Faith Song retired the next 15 hitters she faced and was throwing a no-hitter until Slemp broke it up.
The Cardinals (18-11, 11-4 GLVC) scored a run in the first on an RBI single by Song with two outs to plate Rachel Potvin who had walked. WJC added two more runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
S&T threatened in the seventh getting an RBI single from
Erin Premer (McCook, Neb./McCook) and a sacrifice fly from
Adrienne Kruse (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) to cut the deficit to three and had the tying run in the on-deck circle, but couldn't complete the comeback. Slemp, Premer,
Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) and
Hannah Jokisch (De Soto, Kan./De Soto) each recorded a hit in the contest.
Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) took the loss allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits in 4.2 innings of work. She walked two and struck out one.
In the second game the Lady Miners jumped on top in the first inning as Slemp hit a solo shot to center for her fourth roundtripper of the season.
The Cardinals tied the game in the third on a bloop single down the right field line scoring Megan Risetter.
WJC added another run in the fourth and had a chance to bust it open but
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) started a 1-2-6 double play to get out of the inning. S&T tied it in the fifth on a two-out solo shot to center off the bat of
Dana Lawson (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette). For Lawson it was her fourth home run of the year.
The Cardinals took the lead again in the sixth getting back-to-back doubles to start the inning. Slemp got a grounder, looked the runner back at third and threw the runner out at first. The runner at third tried to score on the throw to first and Premer had a chance to get her at the plate, but her throw was wild allowing both runs to score.
S&T got a one-out single from
Raven Loughridge (Belle, Mo./Belle) in the seventh to bring the tying run to the dish, but a strikeout and a foul out ended the game.
The Lady Miners had six hits in game two led by Slemp and
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) with two each. Strope took the loss allowing four runs, all earned, on eight hits in six innings of work. She struck out three and didn't walk a batter.
S&T is scheduled to return to the diamond on Wednesday when it travels to Rockhurst University for a doubleheader with the Hawks beginning at 3 p.m.
