Box Score 2 QUINCY, Ill. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners headed into the final day of the regular season knowing they needed to win both games and get some help to get into the conference tournament for the first time since 2010. After a promising start the Lady Miners fell
9-3 in the opener and then lost the second one
8-5 at Quincy.
S&T (13-25, 12-20 GLVC) saw its first two hitters reach on a single and a walk. A sacrifice bunt by
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) moved the runners up to second and third with one out. After a strikeout,
Kate Runyan (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove) delivered a two-run double down the left field line to put the Lady Miners up 2-0.
Quincy (22-28, 17-19 GLVC) answered with two in the second and had a chance for more but
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) pitched around runners at second and third with no outs to keep the score tied at 2-2. The Hawks added another run in the third to take a 3-2 lead off of
Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia), who replaced Strope, to start the third.
Runyan tied the game in the fourth hitting a 3-2 pitch to right center for her second home run of the season. Quincy responded though scoring six times in the bottom half of the inning with five of those runs coming with two outs.
S&T tried to rally in the seventh seeing their first two hitters reach on singles, but couldn't score.
Duncan took the loss allowing five runs, all earned, on four hits in 1.2 innings. She walked two and struck out two.
The Lady Miners finished with five hits in the contest led by Runyan with two and all three RBIs.
In the second game on Sunday the Hawks scored a run in the first to break on top on Ashleigh Roscetti's RBI groundout. S&T would tie the game in the second. Runyan led off and singled and went to second on a wild pitch. She came around to score on
Rachel Glenn (Chicago, Ill./Marion Catholic)'s single.
Quincy retook the lead in the second, but the Lady Miners scored twice in the third on
Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs)'s two run single down the left field line.
The score held that way until the sixth.
Dana Lawson (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) led off and singled then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Kelsi O'Neill (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs). She scored on
Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara )'s single to left.
S&T couldn't hold the lead though as the Hawks scored six times in the home half of the sixth. Emma Topps and Jessica Grimes each delivered two run singles in the inning. The Lady Miners scored once in the seventh on
Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf)'s RBI double and had the tying run at the plate with one out, but couldn't get the tying hit.
S&T finished the game with 12 hits led by Smith and Runyan with three apiece.
Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) took the loss allowing eight runs on 13 hits in 5.1 innings of work. She walked two and didn't record a strikeout.
