Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – It was a long day of softball for the Missouri S&T Lady Miners and Illinois Springfield Prairie Stars as the two sides played essentially three games in Springfield, Ill. UIS took two of the three winning
7-2 and
8-2 while the Lady Miners picked up a
10-4 win in the middle contest.
The two sides were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader, but before getting to that they had to finish the second game of the doubleheader which was suspended in Rolla due to rain on March 30. The Prairie Stars (20-27, 14-18 GLVC) led 5-1 in the top of the third when that game was halted.
The game resumed with UIS having runners at first and second with only one out.
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) got out of the jam getting a groundout and a strikeout to end the inning. S&T (13-23, 12-18 GLVC) had a golden chance to climb back into the game in the bottom of the third getting back-to-back singles from
Jamie Hatlan (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit ) and
Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) to start the inning. The Lady Miners couldn't come through with a key hit and left two on.
UIS added to its lead in the fourth with two more runs to make it 7-1. S&T threatened in the fifth and sixth innings but couldn't score. They got a run in the seventh on a RBI single from
Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) which brought home Davis.
The Lady Miners outhit the Prairie Stars 9-8 in the contest and were led by Smith with three and two RBIs. Davis and Hatlan added two hits each.
Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) suffered the loss allowing two runs in one-third of an inning.
In the first game of the scheduled doubleheader, S&T struck first with two outs in the top of the second.
Dana Lawson (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) hit a 2-2 pitch over the center field fence for her sixth home run of the season to put the Lady Miners up 1-0. UIS answered with four runs in the home half of the third. Jordyn Amos hit a two-run homer to left center and Sam Riss added a two-run single down the right field line.
S&T got a run back in the fourth when
Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) scored on a wild pitch. The Lady Miners continued to trail until the sixth when they took advantage of some wildness by Prairie Star starter Cheyenne Bowman. S&T sent 13 hitters to the plate in the eight run inning on just four hits. It took advantage of four walks and an error in the frame.
Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) had a two-run single in the frame while Lawson,
Adrienne Kruse (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville), Davis and Michaelis had RBIs as well.
Strope had to work out of trouble in both the sixth and seventh innings to pick up her sixth win of the season. She went the distance allowing four runs, all earned, on eight hits. She walked five and struck out one.
Davis paced the offense with two hits.
S&T broke on top in the finale scoring in the first inning. Davis led off and singled and stole second. She came around to score on
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield)'s single to left. UIS tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with a two-out hit and then in the second took advantage of a dropped fly ball in left with two outs and went onto score three unearned runs.
The Prairie Stars took advantage of another error in the third to add three more runs and capped the scoring with a run in the fourth.
The Lady Miners had nine hits in the nightcap led by Davis, Smith and Michaelis with two apiece. Keal took the loss allowing eight runs, three earned on nine hits in three innings of work. She struck out two and walked four.
S&T closes out the regular season on Sunday with a doubleheader at Quincy University beginning at 12 p.m.
