3-0 and
5-0 on Sunday afternoon in Rolla.
William Jewell (26-13, 19-6 GLVC) got on the board first on Sunday scoring in the opening frame. They started the game with back-to-back infield singles.
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) got a strikeout on the third hitter, but a wild pitch allowed the runners to move up to second and third with one out. A groundout to short plated the first run before Strope retired the fifth hitter looking at strike three.
S&T (10-21, 9-16 GLVC) threatened in the second getting a two-out single down the left field line from
Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf). She stole second, but was left there when
Erin Premer (McCook, Neb./McCook) flew out to the left fielder in deep left center to end the inning.
The Cardinals added to their lead in the fourth. With one out Faith Song lined a single to center and then Brittany Marsden lined a triple into the gap in right center to score Song. Marsden scored as well on the play when
Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East)'s throw to third got away.
The Lady Miners got three straight singles to open the bottom of the fourth to load the bases, but couldn't score. Michaelis hit into a 5-2-5 double play retiring
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) and
Raven Loughridge (Belle, Mo./Belle) on the play. Premer then flied out to left to end the threat.
S&T threatened again in the sixth getting a pair of singles to put runners at the corner with two out, but Michaelis popped up too short to end the inning.
The Lady Miners had seven hits in the opener led by Baker and
Kate Runyan (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove) with two apiece. Strope pitched a complete game allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits. She struck out 10 while issuing one free pass.
In game two S&T had a runner in scoring position in each of the first two innings, but couldn't get them in. The Lady Miner defense turned two double plays as well in the first two innings to keep the game scoreless.
It remained scoreless until the fourth.
Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) hit the lead-off batter and then walked the next hitter to put two on with no out. Song singled to center and the runner from second tried to score on the play, but
Jamie Hatlan (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit ) threw a strike to
Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) to retire the runner at the plate. The other two runners advanced to second and third on the play. With the infield drawn in, Marsden singled off Slemp's glove up the middle to drive in the first two runs of game two.
Jewell added two more runs in the fifth and another in the seventh for the final margin.
S&T had just three hits in the nightcap led by
Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) with two while Slemp had the other one. Keal pitched a complete game as well allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits. She fanned four and walked three.
