Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners rallied from an early deficit to take the opener of its doubleheader at Maryville 
4-2 on Saturday in St. Louis. The Lady Miners nearly pulled off another comeback in the second game before falling 
4-3.
The Saints (9-19, 6-12 GLVC) scored the game's first run in the opening inning without the benefit of a hit. Shelby Steinkamp led the game off with a walk and went to second on a sacrifice. Kelsey Kapitzke fouled out to first for the second out. Steinkamp went to third on the play and scored when 
Olivia Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada) couldn't hang onto the throw from 
Erin Premer (McCook, Neb./McCook).
S&T (9-16, 8-11 GLVC) threatened in the second getting two on with two out, but wouldn't score. It would breakthrough in the third. 
Dana Lawson (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) led off the inning with a walk and stole second. She scored on 
Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East)'s two-run homer to center. For Slemp it was her fifth roundtripper of the season.
The game remained that way until the seventh. With one out 
Jamie Hatlan (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit ) singled through the right side and went to third on Lawson's double down the right field line. Slemp drove in her third run with a sacrifice fly to center. 
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) drove home the fourth run with a single up the middle to plate Lawson.
Maryville added a run in the home half of the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate, but 
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) struck out Celci Mueller to end the game.
The Lady Miners banged out eight hits in the opener getting two apiece from Baker and 
Cassie Rizzo (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves). Strope evened her record at 3-3 by pitching a complete game. She allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out four and walking one.
The second game was scoreless until the home half of the third. The Saints got a pair of one out infield singles putting two on. 
Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) got Karlie Twisselman to fly out to left, but couldn't escape the jam as Kapitzke hit a three-run homer to left. Maryville added to its lead in the fifth getting an unearned run on a two out single.
S&T took advantage of a Saint error in its half of the sixth. With two outs, Baker singled to put two on. 
Kate Runyan (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove) drove in the first run with a single to right center and then 
Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) doubled home Baker and Runyan with a bullet to right center making it a one run contest. Kelsi
O'Neill had a chance to tie the game, but was retired to end the threat. 
The Lady Miners had five hits in the nightcap with five different players recording one. Keal took the loss allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits. She walked two and struck out one in five innings of work.
S&T returns to action on Sunday when it takes on Missouri-St. Louis in a GLVC doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m., in St. Louis.
