Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Saint Leo, Fla.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miner softball team earned its first win of the season defeating Northwood (Fla.) 13-0 in five innings on Saturday morning. S&T then dropped its second game to Tarleton State 12-2.

The Lady Miners (1-3) jumped on top early loading the bases with no one out and then Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) delivered the big blow blasting a grand slam to right center. S&T added two more in the second on a sacrifice fly from Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) and a single by Smith to make it 6-0.

The Lady Miners got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the fourth and then broke it open sending 10 hitters to the plate in the bottom of the frame scoring seven runs. Erin Premer (McCook, Neb./McCook) had the big blow with a three-run double.

The top four spots in the order went 8 for 11 with nine runs scored and eight RBIs. Smith, Baker, Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) and Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) each had two hits apiece. Smith finished with five RBIs while Premer added three.

Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) got the win allowing no runs on four hits while striking out four and walking one to even her record at 1-1.

In the second game on Saturday against Tarleton State the Lady Miners fell behind 1-0 just two batters in the game on a pair of errors. Things could've been worse as the TexAnns (7-3) had the bases loaded with no one out, but Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) got a pair of strikeouts and a ground out to escape the jam.

S&T took the lead in the home half of the second when Smith and Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) each hit a solo home run to put the Lady Miners ahead 2-1.

The lead was short lived as Arianna Rodriguez tied it in the third with a solo home run to left center.

The TexAnns broke the tie with three in the third then added one with four in the sixth and three in the seventh for the final margin.

Smith, Michaelis and Baker accounted for the offense with a hit apiece. S&T didn't get another hit after Michaelis's roundtripper as the final 16 hitters were set down in order. Keal suffered the loss allowing seven runs, six earned , on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work. She walked three and struck out five.

The Lady Miners are scheduled to play at home next Saturday against Grand Valley State in a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
