(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T volleyball team begins a five match homestand against Lewis on Saturday evening beginning at 5 p.m. The Miners are battling for a berth in the conference tournament and need a strong finish to secure a spot.
S&T has won five of its six home matches this season and is averaging almost 14 kills per set in those contests opposed to the 11.3 kills per set in the 20 matches away from home. Its attack percentage is of .245 (289k/99e/774ta) is nearly 100 points higher, are giving up fewer kills and holding opponents to a hitting percentage of .143 (254k/141e/790ta).
It won't be an easy road though as the Flyers come to town as co-leaders of the GLVC's East Division at 11-2 along with Southern Indiana and are 18-8 overall. Lewis went 2-1 last week falling to Rockhurst in straight sets then upset 22
nd ranked Wheeling Jesuit (W.V.) in four sets and swept past William Jewell last Sunday.
The Flyers have an attack percentage of .238 (1233k/465e/3229ta) and are averaging 13.4 kills per set while their opponents are hitting .169 percent. Kim Vertin leads the Lewis attack with 322 kills while Alexis Davito is second with 289. Morgan Cebula and Cassidy Parsons are the only other two with more than 100 kills. Leigh Barea runs the offense dishing out an average of 10.31 assists per set.
Wisconsin-Parkside finds itself on the outside looking in the conference tournament race. The Rangers enter play this week at 16-10 overall, but is just 6-7 in league play. They're currently a match behind Bellarmine for fourth in the East Division and are three games behind Indianapolis. That's important because the top three teams in each division secure automatic berths with the final two spots going to the teams with the next best records.
Parkside won two of its three matches last week and will play at Drury on Saturday evening before heading to Rolla on Sunday. The Rangers are hitting .187 percent and holding their opponents to an attack percentage of .156. Makenzie Fahnestock leads the team with 236 kills while Bridget Nickel has contributed 189 kills to the attack.
The Miners continue their homestand next Tuesday with a match against Drury beginning at 7 p.m.
