Late run does in Lady Miners in 83-70 loss to Minnesota Duluth

Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – Missouri S&T went cold at the wrong time and it cost them as Minnesota Duluth went on a 14-0 run in a five minute stretch to sink the Lady Miners 83-70 on Friday afternoon. S&T gave up 11 three's in the contest and 25 points off of turnovers in the loss.

The Lady Miners (1-1) trailed for most of the second half before tying it on a pair of Kylie Cooper (Andover, Kan./Andover) free throws with 9:02 left in the contest. UMD (1-0) answered on the ensuing possession on a Megan Lueck three-pointer to put the Bulldogs back in front. Hannah Rutten then split a pair at the charity stripe to extend the lead back to four.

Mia Wesley (Philadelphia, Pa./John Bartram) kept S&T close hitting a running jumper in the paint to pull it within a bucket. That would be the closest it would get. Jessica Newman buried a three right in front of the Duluth bench to push the lead to five and ignite a 14-0 run. Rutten had four points in the run while Katrina Newman and Lueck had three apiece.

The Lady Miners finally snapped the spell with 2:18 left on a layup by Karli Sample (St. Joseph, Mo./Benton), but Lueck countered with a her third trey of the half to make it a 17-point margin.

S&T got off to a good start in this one getting out to an early five-point lead seven minutes into the contest. From that point the Bulldogs went on a 15-4 run to take a 22-16 lead on a three by K. Newman with 9:12 left in the half.

Minnesota Duluth continued to hold the lead and held a seven-point cushion with less than five minutes to play in the half. The Lady Miners fought back getting to within 33-31 on a jumper by Karli Sample (St. Joseph, Mo./Benton), but the Bulldogs finished the half scoring eight of the last 10 points to go into the break up 41-33.

S&T shot the ball at a 54 percent (30-for-56) clip for the game and was 4-of-8 from three, but shot only 50 percent at the foul line. The Lady Miners turned it over 22 times and were outrebounded by a 36-to-33 margin. The Bulldogs finished with 13 offensive rebounds and had 13 second chance points.

Wesley led all scorers with 22 points. Sample dropped in 14 while Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) added 12 more.

Duluth finished the game shooting 46.4 percent, but took 13 more shots than S&T. The Bulldogs connected on 39 percent of their three-point attempts and shot 57 percent at the foul line. UMD had five players reach double figures in scoring led by K. Newman and Rutten with 16 points apiece. Lueck dropped in 14 off the bench while Danielle Flood and Alyssa Kerkhoff finished with 10 points each.

S&T returns to the court on Saturday evening squaring off against Arkansas-Monticello at 6 p.m.
