S&T seeks to finish 2013 season with third straight victory

11/12/2013 8:35:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – With an opportunity for a winning season in the offering, Missouri S&T's football team closes out its 2013 schedule Saturday at Allgood-Bailey Stadium with a visit from Quincy University.  Kickoff for the Great Lakes Valley Conference contest is at 1 p.m.

Saturday's game is Fort Leonard Wood/Military Appreciation Day at Missouri S&T, as all military members – active, reserve, dependent or retired – will be admitted free of charge.  The Miners' 14 senior players will also be honored prior to the start of the contest.

The Miners, winners of two straight games and four of their last five to reach the .500 mark for the first time this season, are coming off a 31-21 victory Saturday over McKendree.   After the Bearcats got on the scoreboard first on the opening play of the second quarter, S&T rattled off 31 unanswered points to build an insurmountable lead.

Melvin Stovall (Los Angeles, Calif./Lancaster), this week's GLVC "Offensive Player of the Week", is coming off a game in which he amassed 166 all-purpose yards as he caught eight passes for 100 yards and a touchdown.   For the season, Stovall has caught 62 passes for 661 yards and four touchdowns, setting a new S&T single season mark for receptions by a first year player.

Quarterback Peter Simpson (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) has completed 36-of-61 passes in the two most recent Miner wins and has completed nearly 51 percent of his throws on the season for 823 yards and five touchdowns.

Linebacker Chris Emesih (Houston, Texas/Westfield), one of the 14 seniors who will be playing their last game in a Miner uniform Saturday, leads the S&T defenders with 89 tackles, while fellow seniors Mark Hopkins (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) has 57 stops and Chris Horn (Tulsa, Okla./Booker T. Washington) 55.  Hopkins leads the team with four interceptions, while junior defensive end Dan Mauszycki (Gardner, Kan./Gardner-Edgerton HS) has team highs in tackles for lost yardage with 13 and sacks with six.

Quincy enters its final game of the year as the owner of a 2-8 overall record and 1-5 mark in the GLVC.  Nearly a month ago, the Hawks set a conference record by scoring 80 points in a win at Kentucky Wesleyan, but have lost all three games they have played since that outing in which they racked up 707 yards of total offense.

Thanks in part to that performance, the Hawks have the GLVC's third-best offense in terms of yardage per game as they are averaging 378.4 yards a contest.   Much of that has been through the air, as Quincy enters the final week of regular season play as the league's top passing offense with an average of 242 yards per game.

Quarterback Nick Lonergan has completed nearly 55 percent of his passes on the season for a league-high 2,389 yards and has the GLVC leader in receiving yardage in wideout Justin Dickens with 1,003 yards on 59 catches.   Dickens also has eight touchdown receptions and fellow wideout De'Carlos Poole has made 29 catches.

On defense, the Hawks are led by linebacker Ike Onike with 78 tackles and Dan Camp with 76 stops.  Defensive end Tyler Reidl has made 10 tackles for a loss and has six sacks to his credit.

As part of Saturday's festivities, Phelps for the Fort – one of the game sponsors -- is donating an iPad Mini that will be raffled off at the game.  Tickets for the raffle will be on sale at the game until the end of the halftime and the winner will be announced at the end of the third quarter of play.

The raffle tickets are being sold by the South Central Regional Veterans Association, who will also be accepting straight donations at the gate on the day of the game.

This Year's Fort Leonard Wood/Military Appreciation Day is sponsored by Missouri S&T Athletics, Rolla Area Chamber of Commerce and Phelps for the Fort.
