Box Score INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Two turnovers that came after a weather delay led to a pair of Indianapolis touchdowns before the first half ended Saturday night, pushing the 21
st-ranked Greyhounds into the lead and to an eventual
34-3 victory in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams.
The tough defensive battle in the early stages of the contest was tied at three apiece when play was stopped with 6:22 left in the opening half. When the contest resumed after a stoppage that lasted 33 minutes, Greyhound linebacker Derrick Bryant intercepted
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage HS)'s pass on the first play to give UIndy the ball at the S&T 48-yard line.
Eight plays later, Klay Fiechter scored on a nine-yard run to put the Greyhounds in front.
The Miners' next possession also ended with an interception, as Andre Smith picked off a Brown pass and brought it back to the Miner 25. After a pass interference call moved the ball to the 10, quarterback Chris Mills ran it into the end zone on the next play to make it 17-3.
S&T scored on the game's opening possession on a drive that lasted nearly six minutes. Much of the work on the drive was done by
Zenel Hudson (Bayshore, N.Y./Milford Academy), who had 20 yards on the ground and caught a 17-yard pass from Brown to reach the UIndy two-yard line. However, the Miners had to settle for a 24-yard field goal from
Adam Peden (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington) to take the early lead.
The Miner defense held the Greyhounds in check for much of the first half, as UIndy had minus seven yards in total offense until the Greyhounds put together their first scoring drive in the early stages of the second quarter that ended with a 20-yard field goal by Scott Miller.
Both teams traded possessions before the storm that led to the delay rolled in, after which the Greyhounds were able to seize control on the scoreboard thanks to the two interceptions.
UIndy (4-1, 1-0 GLVC) added to its lead in the second half when Miller booted a 35-yard field goal late in the third quarter, then broke the game open in the final period as Greg Johnson hauled in a 13-yard scoring pass from reserve quarterback Connor Barthel in the first minute and Matt Ripp scored on a 14-yard touchdown run after Andre Smith picked off his third pass of the game.
The Miners held a 297-270 advantage in yardage in the game that was played in the rain throughout the evening, but six turnovers for the second week in a row plagued S&T.
Chris Kennard (Plano, Texas/Parish Episcopal) ran for 72 yards as the Miners finished with 205 yards on the ground overall.
S&T held Klay Fiechter, the GLVC's leading rusher coming into play to 27 yards.
The Miners, who dropped to 1-4 overall with Saturday's loss, will conclude its three-game road trip next week with a 3 p.m. game against Kentucky Wesleyan in Owensboro, Ky.
