After slow start Miners hang with fourth ranked Jennies

Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – After getting off to a slow start the Missouri S&T volleyball team hung with the fourth ranked Central Missouri Jennies falling 3-0 (17-25, 22-25, 20-25) on Tuesday night in Rolla. The Miners finished the match with an attack percentage of .204.

The Jennies (15-0) scored five of the first six points to open the match and never relinquished the lead. They led by seven early before the Miners (6-7) began to chip away at the lead eventually getting to within 17-14 on an error by Central Missouri. The Jens responded with a 6-1 run to take control of the set and take the opening set 25-17. S&T hit .233 (10k/3e/30ta) in the frame but the Jennies had an attack percentage of .368 (18k/4/38ta). Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) led the Miners with four kills in the opening set while Taylor Goodness had six kills to lead UCM.

S&T started the second stanza out hot by scoring the first five points of the set and led for most of the set.  It was up 17-15 when the Jennies used a 5-0 run to retake lead. After a Miner timeout they responded with three straight points to tie the set, but were unable to regain the lead as UCM closed out the frame scoring five of the last seven points.

S&T recorded 12 kills in the set and had an attack percentage of .222. Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) led the way with four kills while Haslag and Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) had three kills apiece.

The Jens hit .366 percent in the stanza and had 19 kills. Carly Sojka finished with seven kills. Maddie Jones contributed four while Taylor Goodness and Haley Thompson had three each.

The Miners led early in the third set before Central Missouri took control with six straight points turning a two point deficit into a six point advantage. The Jens stretched their lead to six, but S&T refused to go quietly eventually tying the match at 19-all. Just like the second set though the Miners couldn't get over the hump as UCM closed out the match on a 6-1 run.

S&T finished the match with 33 kills against 13 errors in 98 total attempts. Haslag led the way with 10 kills while Moon contributed eight to the attack and Wright finished with seven. Allie Plunk (Hurst, Texas/Birdville) had 26 assists and nine digs. Cydney Denning (San Antonio, Texas/Brandeis ) finished the match with 11 digs.

The Jennies finished the match with an attack percentage of .299 recording 50 kills against 15 errors in 117 attempts. Sojka and Goodness had 15 kills each while Jones and Thompson contributed seven kills apiece to the attack. Julia Bates distributed 38 assists while Annie Reilly finished with 17 digs.

The Miners are back in action on Friday evening when they travel to Liberty, Mo., to take on William Jewell College in a GLVC match beginning at 7 p.m.
