Defending GLVC champs on tap for Miners in conference opener

10/1/2013 1:16:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – The two teams that finished atop the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings last season and the top two in the league's pre-season poll for the 2013 campaign will face off Saturday night when Missouri S&T heads to the road to face defending conference champion Indianapolis.

The contest at Key Stadium will get underway at 6 p.m., Eastern time.

The Greyhounds handed the Miners their only loss in 2012, a 54-35 triumph at Allgood-Bailey Stadium in late September.  The Miners would go on to win their final six games after the setback to finish at 10-1, while UIndy would not lose again until the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs, when it fell to Colorado State-Pueblo a week after knocking off Midwestern State in the opening round.

But in 2013, the Miners went 1-3 in non-conference play – with two of the losses coming to nationally-ranked teams – and are coming off a 27-10 loss at Lindenwood.  The Miner defense played well for the second week in a row, holding the high-powered Lion attack to just 322 yards of total offense, but the S&T offense was plagued by six turnovers, including two in the first quarter that led to Lindenwood touchdowns.

S&T quarterback Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage HS) completed a career-high 31 passes in last week's game and is 91-of-158 on the season for 908 yards and three touchdowns.  Melvin Stovall (Los Angeles, Calif./Lancaster) has 24 receptions to lead the Miner receiving corps and Leon Moody (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit HS) has 20 after a 10-catch effort last week, while Zenel Hudson (Bayshore, N.Y./Milford Academy) is fifth in the GLVC in rushing with 389 yards.

Defensively, Chris Emesih (Houston, Texas/Westfield) has made 33 tackles on the year and fellow linebacker Chris Horn (Tulsa, Okla./Booker T. Washington) has two of the Miners' four interceptions, including one in each of the last two S&T contests.

The Miner defense will have to contend with the GLVC's top rusher and passer in terms of yardage this weekend, as Klay Fiechter – who had 190 yards on the ground in the Greyhounds' win a year ago – has 438 yards through the first four games of the season, which includes a 198-yard performance this year.   Quarterback Chris Mills has completed 61.5 percent of his passes for 990 yards, with 27 of his completions going to Reece Horn.

UIndy's defense is headed by linebackers Derrick Bryant and Todd Hacker, who have 43 and 38 tackles, respectively on the year, while defensive end Vince Maida has 4.5 sacks and earned the GLVC's "Defensive Player of the Week" award after recording 2.5 sacks in a 17-14 win over Hillsdale last week that moved UIndy to 3-1 on the season.

The Greyhound defensive unit leads the GLVC with just 298 yards and 18.5 points allowed per game heading into play this weekend.

Indianapolis is ranked 20th this week in the D2Football.com poll and 21st by the American Football Coaches Association in NCAA Division II.
