Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – A sequence of three plays in the second quarter swung the tide of Saturday's Great Lakes Valley Conference showdown at Allgood-Bailey Stadium, sending Indianapolis on its way to a
54-35 win over Missouri S&T and into sole possession of first place in the league standings.
With the score tied at 14 in the second quarter, the Miners missed a chance to take the lead when
Leon Moody (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit HS)'s reverse pass was dropped by a wide-open
Joseph Hyman (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades). On the next play,
Josh Firm (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) had his pass intercepted by Max Davis, who returned it to the S&T 28-yard line.
The Davis interception was followed by a touchdown pass from Chris Mills to Mar'Quone Edmonds that put the Greyhounds up for good. UIndy scored 12 more points before the half ended, then tacked on two more touchdowns in the first five-plus minutes of the second half to pull away.
S&T fired the first salvo in Saturday's matchup in the game's first two minutes, despite being pinned back at their own five-yard line after the opening kickoff.
After getting a first down – but then being set back five yards by a penalty – Firm connected with
Curterris Golden (Chicago, Ill./John Hope) over the middle and after breaking past several tacklers as he worked his way to midfield, got loose and scored on an eventual 89-yard reception that matched the second-longest completion in school history.
The Greyhounds tied the score on Klay Fiechter's five-yard run, but the Miners regained the lead early in the second quarter as Golden, taking the snap in the wildcat formation, ran three yards to put S&T in front 14-7.
UIndy responded with a grinding 15-play, 70-yard drive that took nearly eight minutes off the clock, ending on a three-yard scoring run by Fiechter. That touchdown started a 40-point run by the Greyhounds in a span of just under 12 minutes of playing time.
After the score by Edmonds that put UIndy in front, Greg Johnson caught a 11-yard touchdown pass with 56 remaining in the half, which was followed by a safety after a bad snap on a punt and a 26-yard field goal by Scott Miller as the half ended. Fiechter added two more touchdown runs early in the third quarter of 34 and 78 yards.
The Miners halted the scoring run later in the third quarter on a three-yard touchdown pass from Firm to
Ian Kreher (Warrensburg, Mo./Warrensburg); Firm would later throw a scoring pass to Hyman covering eight yards and
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage HS) fired a 13-yard touchdown pass to
Nick Taylor (Wichita, Kan./Southeast HS) in the final minute of play.
Indianapolis outgained the Miners by a 518-461 margin, as the Miners were guilty of three turnovers to UIndy's one. Firm completed 28-of-38 for 322 yards – his fourth straight game with 300 or more yards through the air – while
Smook Thomas (Quincy, Fla./East Gadsden) finished with eight receptions in the contest. Golden had 48 yards rushing and David Hughes added 43 as S&T ran for 126 in the contest.
Fiechter ended the night with 190 yards on the ground on 23 carries and accounted for 272 all-purpose yards, while Mills threw for 270 yards on 18-of-22 passing for the Greyhounds (3-2, 3-0 GLVC).
Missouri S&T, which dropped to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in league play, will head to the road next Saturday to face Central State in Wilberforce, Ohio. The Marauders won their second GLVC contest Saturday with a 23-21 win at William Jewell.
