Box Score (Quincy, Ill.) – In its previous two visits to Quincy, the Missouri S&T Miner volleyball squad got off to fast starts but were pushed to the brink. That wasn't the case on Friday as S&T won its fourth straight match with a
3-0 sweep (26-24, 28-24, 25-19) of the Hawks at the QU Pepsi Arena.
The opening set was tied at 15-all when Quincy (8-3, 2-2 GLVC) scored six of the next eight points to take a 21-17 advantage. The lead grew to 23-18 before the Miners (8-5, 4-0 GLVC) rallied scoring eight of the final nine points, including the last four, to take the opening set 26-24.
Kelly Kosmopolis (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) had seven of the team's 16 kills in the stanza. S&T hit 22.5 percent in the frame while the Hawks hit just 13.2 percent.
Quincy led by as many as five at 20-15 in set two, but once again the Miners rallied. They scored seven straight points to take a 22-20 advantage. The two sides traded points before the Hawks scored three straight to grab the lead back at 24-23. S&T responded scoring the next two to regain a 25-24 edge. It had two set points but couldn't finish it off until the third one.
Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) gave the Miners a 27-26 lead and then an attack error by Samantha Haegele gave S&T the commanding 2-0 lead. The Miners hit just 13 percent, but held Quincy to just 10.6 percent. Meyer and
Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) had three kills apiece while
Torrie Rupe (Wichita, Kan./Collegiate), Kosmopolis and
Alison Mueller (Bartelso, Ill./Mater Dei ) had two each in the set. Gianna Lincoln and Briann Joslin had three each to lead the Hawks.
S&T raced out to a 6-1 lead in the third set and wouldn't look back. Its lead eventually grew to 21-11 on a kill by Meyer. Quincy made a run at a comeback scoring five straight to close within 21-16, but would get no closer than four. The Miners held off the charge getting a kill from Rupe and Lyndsay Kooi was called for a ball handling error to end the match.
S&T finished the match with 43 kills against 17 errors in 120 attempts to finish with a 21.7 hitting percentage. Meyer and Kosmopolis led the way with 11 and 10 kills respectively. Costello dished out 29 assists and had 15 digs.
Jocelyn DeMotte (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) had 17 digs while
Jennifer Kegler (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) added eight more.
The Hakws finished with 39 kills against 23 errors in 123 chances to finish with a 13.0 hitting percentage. Lincoln led the way with 10 kills while Brittany Atkinson added seven kills. Kooi had 16 assists and Damaris Linker led the way with 15 digs.
The Miners will go for their fifth straight on Saturday when they take on Illinois Springfield beginning at 3 p.m., in Springfield, Ill.
