Miners sweep past Drury in Front of Largest Crowd in School History

Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) - Playing in front of the largest crowd in school history the Missouri S&T Miners definately didn't disappoint as it swept past Drury 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-20) on Tuesday night. The 1,500 in attendance bested the 1,200 in the program's first ever home match on Sept. 7, 2007, also against Drury.

S&T (7-5, 3-0 GLVC) fell behind 3-1 before running off seven of the next eight points to take an 8-4 lead. The lead grew to 13-7 before the Panthers (6-7, 1-2 GLVC) closed to within 13-9 on a kill from Sara Borneman. The Miners would break it open scoring six of the next seven points to go up 19-10. Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) and Alison Mueller (Bartelso, Ill./Mater Dei ) each had a pair of kills in the run. Drury would close to within 21-15 before S&T ran off the final four points to take the set 25-15. The Miners hit 35 percent in the opening frame and holding the Panthers to just 6.4 percent.

Drury raced out to a 4-0 lead in set two, but another S&T run put them back in front at 7-5. The Panthers tied it up at 9-all, before the Miners put the set away scoring 12 of the next 14 points to go up 21-11. S&T eventually led 23-12 before Drury cut the deficit to 24-16. Kelly Kosmopolis (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) put the set away though with a kill to give the Miners a commanding 2-0 lead. S&T hit only 19 percent in set with nine kills, but held the Panthers to a negative three hitting percentage.

Drury started out set three just like set two, but once again the Miners made a charge to overtake them. S&T was ahead 14-13 when it began to pull away with seven straight points to go up 21-13. The Panthers clawed their way back to 23-20 but the Miners got back-to-back kills from Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) and Kosmopolis to end the match. S&T hit 26.3 percent in the stanza and held Drury to a zero hitting percentage.

The Miners finished the match with 43 kills and were led by Mueller with 10. Haslag and Kosmopolis had eight kills each. Costello dished out 33 assists and Jocelyn DeMotte (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) had 19 digs.

The Panthers had 24 kills and were led by Borneman with eight while Alex Smith had seven. Maddie Baumann had 17 assists while Brooke Foster had 11 digs.

S&T hits the road for four straight starting this weekend when it travels to Quincy, Ill., for a match against the Quincy Hawks on Friday night starting at 7 p.m.
