(Rolla, Mo.) - The Missouri S&T Miners got off to a fast start and wouldn't look back as it swept past Rockhurst 
3-0 (25-12, 26-24, 25-18) on Saturday afternoon in Rolla. The win was the 11th straight home win for S&T.
The Miners (6-5, 2-0 GLVC) never trailed in the opening set as they scored the first seven points of the match and eventually built their lead to 19-6. The Hawks (8-2, 1-1 GLVC) got as close as 11 points, but couldn't get any closer as S&T finished it off on a kill by 
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ). The Miners recorded 14 kills against two errors in the opening set to finish hitting 37.5 percent. The defense held Rockhurst to just 8.6 percent hitting (9 kills/6 errors/35 total attacks).
The Hawks stormed out of the gates in set two taking a 7-2 lead. S&T scored five straight to tie it at 7-7 before the two sides traded points until 20-20. Kills by Haslag and 
Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) gave the Miners a 22-20 lead. S&T led 23-21, but gave up three straight points to trail 24-23. After a timeout by S&T, 
Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) tied it with a kill and then a kill from 
Jackie Zellmer (Nixa, Mo./Nixa) set up set point at 25-24. Meyer ended with a service ace to give the Miners a commanding 2-0 lead.
The third set was much like the first as S&T led throughout. It scored the first eight points, but Rockhurst answered eight of the next 10 to get within 10-8. The Miners answered right back though scoring six of the next seven to push their advantage to 16-19. The Hawks wouldn't get closer than four points the rest of the way as S&T finished on a 7-4 run to win the set 25-18. The Miners hit just 17 percent in the last set but held Rockhurst to a zero hitting percentage.
The Miners finished with 47 kills and were led by Haslag and Meyer with 11 each. 
Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) dished out 40 set assists while 
Jocelyn DeMotte (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) added 14 digs. As a team S&T hit 22.1 percent for the match.
Rockhurst was led by Maggie Hummel with 11 kills. Katie Loescher chipped in with eight more. Whitney Kostal had 24 set assists while she and Victoria Mahl had 13 digs each. The Hawks finished with 31 kills as team and hit just under 10 percent for the match.
The Miners conclude their three-match homestand on Tuesday when they host Drury at 7 p.m.
