Volleyball drops pair in Oregon to open 2012 campaign

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Monmouth, Ore.) - The Missouri S&T Lady Miners dropped a pair of matches on Friday in the Western Oregon Invitational in Monmouth, Ore. S&T dropped its first match of the season against Florida Southern 3-0 (14-25, 22-25, 15-25) and to Western Oregon 3-0 (22-25, 17-25, 20-25).

In the first match of the day against the Moccasins (1-2) the Lady Miners held an early pair of one point advantages before FSC went on a run halfway through the set to take command and eventually pulled away for the win. Gabby Fernandez and Anne Pietkiewicz combined for seven of the Mocs 13 kills. Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) and Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) had seven of S&T's 11 kills in the frame.

The second set saw 12 ties and six lead changes in it before Florida Southern broke a 21-21 tie scoring four of the final five points. The third set was all Moccasins as they raced out to an 8-3 advantage and wouldn't look back. The Lady Miners rallied to within three on two different occassions but couldn't get any closer than that.

As a team S&T hit 12.6 percent for the match and was led by Meyer with 12 kills. Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) added eight while Haslag chipped in with seven. FSC hit 31.3 percent and was led by Fernandez with 13 kills.

In the nightcap against Western Oregon the Lady Miners committed 21 attack errors and were never able to recover as the Wolves took advantage of those mistakes. WOU led for a majority of the set and had a 24-19 edge before the Lady Miners closed to within 24-22, but couldn't finish the comeback.

The Wolves held a 13-11 lead in set two midway through before scoring five straight points to build its lead to seven points and eventually go on to win the set 25-17. The third set saw S&T hold a 13-7 edge, but Western Oregon responded with seven straight points to grab a 14-13 lead. They'd eventually build a lead of 19-16 before the Lady Miners got back to within one on a kill from Torrie Rupe (Wichita, Kan./Collegiate). The Wolves would finish the set by scoring six of the final eight points to come away with the 25-20 victory.

Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) had 12 kills to lead the way while Haslag added eight more. S&T finished with 42 kills but had a hitting percentage of .156. Krissi Kemper and Danielle Reese had 11 kills apiece for Western Oregon. As a them the Wolves hit 23.3 percent for the match.

The Lady Miners will face Grand Valley State on Saturday at 12 p.m. (Central Time) and Western Washington at 7 p.m. (Central Time).
