Box Score 2 (Rolla, Mo.) - The Missouri S&T Lady Miners rallied from three run deficit in game two thanks in large part to a 6-run fourth inning to come back and win
12-5 to complete the season sweep over Maryville. S&T won the opening game
3-1 despite getting just one hit in the contest.
In the opener on Saturday the game was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning.
Cassie Rizzo (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) led off and reached on an error by the third baseman. She then stole second. With one out
Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) was hit by an 0-2 pitch and
Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) drew a four pitch walk to load the bases.
Rachel Glenn (Chicago, Ill./Marion Catholic) grounded one to third and the third baseman came home but threw it away allowing Rizzo and Michaelis to score while Smith advanced to third.
Kate Runyan (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove) drove home Smith with a sacrifice fly to right.
The Lady Miners (14-27, 11-15 GLVC) didn't record their first hit until one out in the bottom of the fifth when Michaelis doubled to left field.
The Saints (9-31, 4-22 GLVC) got a two out home run from Sarah Graham in the sixth to cut the deficit to two runs. They put the tying run on base with two outs in the seventh but
Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) finished it off getting the final out to pop up to
Jackie Lybarger (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West).
Keal pitched a complete game four hitter allowing the one run while striking out five and walking three.
In the nightcap, Maryville came out swinging in the top of the first . Karlie Twisselman led off with a bloop single over
Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood)'s head and then Shelby Steinkamp walked to put two on with no outs. Graham drove in both runs with a triple to right center. Kelsey Kapitzke singled home Graham to make it 3-0. S&T responded in the home half of the frame. Briggs walked on a four pitches. Michaelis reached on a fielder's choice as Briggs was safe at second on the play. A wild pitch allowed the runners to move up to second and third. Smith drove in the first runs with a double to right center. That would be all the Lady Miners would get as Smith was stranded at second.
The Saints scored an unearned run in the second to make it 4-2. S&T tied it in the third. Michaelis led the inning off with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. She advanced to third on Smith's groundout to short and scored on
Erin Premer (McCook, Neb./McCook)'s, pinch hitting for
Rachel Glenn (Chicago, Ill./Marion Catholic), double to right center. Premer went to third on a passed ball and scored on Runyan's single to center. The Lady Miners went onto load the bases on a walk and an error but couldn't add to their total as
Adrienne Kruse (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) popped out to short.
S&T took its first lead in game two in the fourth. Briggs reached on an error by the shortstop to start the inning. Michaelis followed that with her second home run of the weekend hitting a line shot over the field fence. Kristyn Caldwell came into replace Kapitzke and allowed a single to Smith. Premer reached on a fielder's choice as Smith was forced out at second. Runyan lined a single to center advancing Premer to second.
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) walked on four pitches to load the bases.
Stefani Moore (Springfield, Mo./Kickapoo ) came into run for her. Schroeder reached on a fielder's choice as the third baseman threw Premer out at the plate. Lybarger made it 7-4 with a single to left scoring Runyan. An error by the left fielder allowed Moore to score and send Schroeder and Lybarger to third and second.
Jamie Hatlan (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit ) singled up the middle to score both runners to make it 10-4.
Maryville scored a run in the top of the fifth, but the Lady Miners scored single runs in the fifth and sixth. Michaelis led off the fifth with a walk and scored on Smith's double to left field. In the sixth
Kasilda Miller (Bourbon, Mo./) doubled to right center with one out and advanced to third on Hatlan's flyout to right. She scored when the second baseman dropped Briggs's popup on the infield.
S&T had 12 hits in the contest led by Smith and Runyan with three apiece. Smith drove in three runs while Michaelis scored four runs and had two RBIs. Hatlan had two RBIs as well. Strope came on in relief of Keal in the fourth and went three innings allowing a run on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks to pick up her third win of the season.
The Lady Miners return to action on Wednesday with a non-conference doubleheader at Missouri Southern beginning at 4 p.m.
