Lady Miners snap nine game skid against Tritons with 10-3 win in game 1 of DH

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Rolla, Mo.) - The Missouri S&T Lady Miners snapped a nine-game losing streak against Missouri-St. Louis with its 10-3 win in the opening game of the its doubleheader on Friday. It was the first win over the Tritons since a 7-0 victory on April 9, 2008. UMSL won game two 6-2.

The Tritons (21-19, 10-12 GLVC) jumped on top in the opener scoring a run in the opening frame. Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South) retired the first two hitters before surrendering a single to Brianna Butler and a double to Madison Zbaraschuk that plated Butler for the first run. S&T (12-27, 9-15) responded in a big way in the bottom of the first. Lauren Briggs (LaMonte, Mo./Knob Noster) led off with a triple down the right field line. Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) walked and then stole second. Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) put the Lady Miners ahead 2-1 lining a double to the gap in right center. Rachel Glenn (Chicago, Ill./Marion Catholic) singled to put runners on the corner with no one out. UMSL made a pitching change bringing Leslie Davis in for Stephanie Benson. Kate Runyan (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove) drove in a run reaching on a fielding error by the second baseman for the third and final run of the frame.

Michaelis made it 5-1 lining a two-run homer down the left field line with two outs in the second. Jackie Lybarger (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West) started the inning off with a double to right center. After a scoreless third, the Tritons cut into the lead with a run in the fourth, but S&T answered in the bottom of the frame as Michaelis drove in her third run of the game with a single up the middle to score Briggs who had started the two out rally with a double.

The Lady Miners put the game away in the fifth scoring three times all with two outs. Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) started the rally with a single to right. Dana Lawson (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) came onto run for her and moved to second on Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood)'s single back up the middle. Lybarger drove in Lawson hitting a ground-rule double to right to make it 7-2. Erin Premer (McCook, Neb./McCook) came off the bench to pinch hit and delivered a two-run single down the left field line to make it 9-2.

Leslie Davis homered with two outs in the top of the sixth to bring UMSL within 9-3. S&T answered again in the bottom of the inning. With two outs in the bottom of the inning Rachel Glenn (Chicago, Ill./Marion Catholic) singled to right. Stefani Moore (Springfield, Mo./Kickapoo ) came into run for her and came around to score on a ball hit by Runyan that was misplayed by the right fielder.

The Tritons put two on the seventh but couldn't score.

The Lady Miners finished game with 13 hits led by Briggs, Michaelis, Glenn and Lybarger with two apiece. Michaelis finished with three RBIs while Smith and Premer had two batted in each. Keal got the win going the distance allowing three runs on eight hits with four punchouts and a pair of walks.

UMSL broke on top again in game two in the first inning scoring an unearned run with two outs on a single by Zbaraschuk. Jenna Boudreau nearly made it 2-0 lining a double to left center but Briggs made a perfect throw to Schroeder who fired a strike to Smith to nail Zbaraschuk at the plate to end the inning.

S&T responded in the bottom of the first. Briggs led off with a bloop single to left center. Michaelis sacrificed her to second and then Smith hit a two-run homer to left to make it 2-1. The Lady Miners had chances to add to their lead in both the second and third innings but left a pair of runners on in both the second and third innings.

The Tritons regained the lead in the fourth on Davis's second roundtripper of the day. This one a two-run blast to center field. S&T had another chance in the fourth putting runners in scoring position but couldn't get the key hit. UMSL extended its lead in the fifth as Butler led the inning off with a solo home run to left center. In the home half of the fifth the Lady Miners saw their first two hitters reach safely. Runyan advanced the runners to second and third with a sacrifice, but just like the three previous innings S&T couldn't get the key hit.

The Tritons scored twice more in the sixth to extend its lead to 6-2. Katie Wood and Zbaraschuk had RBI hits in the frame.

In the seventh the Lady Miners had the tying run in the on-deck circle with two outs but a fly out to center ended the game.

S&T had nine hits in game two led by Smith, Runyan and Lybarger with two apiece. Strope took the loss allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks in 3.1 innings of work.

The Lady Miners continue their 10-game home stand on Saturday when they host Maryville in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
