Box Score 2 (Rolla, Mo.) - Trailing 4-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth of game two the Missouri S&T Lady Miners scored three times with two outs rallying for a
5-4 win over the Drury Panthers on Tuesday afternoon in Rolla. The Panthers won the opener
2-1 breaking a 1-1 tie in the top of the seventh.
The Lady Miners (11-26, 8-14 GLVC) fell behind 3-0 in the top of the third of the nightcap. Marissa Valdez drove home the first run with a one out double down left field line. After a groundout, Amber Hayden singled to left to put runners on the corner then Stacy Razo tripled into the right center field gap to score both runs. Drury (23-14, 12-10 GLVC) added to its lead scoring an unearned run in the fourth to make it 4-0.
S&T responded with a pair of runs in the home half of the inning.
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) started the rally with a one out single to right.
Stefani Moore (Springfield, Mo./Kickapoo ) came into run for her and advanced to second on
Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood)'s single to center.
Kasilda Miller (Bourbon, Mo./) followed that up with a single to deep short. A throwing error by the shortstop allowed Moore to score the first run and sent Schroeder to third.
Jamie Hatlan (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit ) drove in the second run singling off the shortstop's glove to cut the lead in half.
Lauren Briggs (LaMonte, Mo./Knob Noster) flew out to right center advancing
Hannah Jokisch (De Soto, Kan./De Soto), running for Miller, to third.
Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) worked a walk to load the bases, but
Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) grounded out to end the inning.
The Panthers had a chance to add to on their lead in the fifth. With two on and two out Erin Romph singled to left, but Jordan Herman rounded third to far and was thrown out at third to end the inning.
Miller led off the sixth with an infield single to second. With one out Briggs reached on a bunt single to third putting the tying runs on first and second. Michaelis grounded out to second to move the runners up a base. Smith drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases.
Erin Premer (McCook, Neb./McCook) then singled home the tying runs smacking a 3-2 pitch up the middle to score Miller and Briggs.
Kate Runyan (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove) then hit a ball up the middle that the second baseman couldn't make a play on to drive in
Cassie Rizzo (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves), running for Smith, with the go-ahead run.
Drury got a two out single in the seventh but
Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) got Courtney deRonde to pop out to Schroeder to end the game.
The Lady Miners had 10 hits in the contest led by Strope, Miller, Hatlan and Briggs with two apiece.
Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) came on in relief of Strope with one out in the fourth and allowed five hits but no runs while striking out three and walking one to earn her first win of the season.
The opener on Tuesday was a pitcher's duel between Monica Villareal and
Taylor Keal (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs South). The Panthers broke on top in the third. With one out Valdez walked and scored on Toalson's triple to right center. Drury tried to score a second run on Hayden's shallow fly to left. Briggs caught and fired a strike to Smith who tagged out Toalson to end the inning. In the top of the fourth the Panthers had runners the bases loaded with one out. Romph hit a flyball to left for the second out. Razo tried to score on the play but Briggs threw her out to end the inning.
S&T tied it in the home half of the fourth. Michaelis led off with a bunt single to third and then stole second. She advanced to third on Smith's fly out to right center. With two outs Runyan worked a walk to put runners at the corner. Strope hit a smash that the third baseman couldn't handle allowing Michaelis to score the tying run.
It remained that way until the seventh. With one out Regina Norris singled through the left side. Valdez reached on a fielder's choice to third when
Jackie Lybarger (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West) threw out Norris at second. Toalson then singled through the left side on a 3-2 pitch. Hayden drove home the winning run hitting a high chopper over Lybarger's head down the left field line to drive in Valdez.
The Lady Miners finished the contest with just two hits by Schroeder and Michaelis, but hit several balls hard right at defenders. Keal suffered the loss allowing both runs on nine hits with four Ks and two walks.
S&T is back at home on Friday afternoon playing host to Missouri-St. Louis in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
