Box Score 2 (Rolla, Mo.) - The Missouri S&T Lady Miners closed out its 2012 season dropping a doubleheader at home to Illinois Springfield
3-2 and
4-0 on Tuesday afternoon. S&T's comeback from a 3-0 deficit in the first game came up a run short.
The Prairie Stars (30-18, 22-12 GLVC) took advantage of an error to open game one as Mandy Smith reached on an error by
Jackie Lybarger (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West). With one out Smith stole second and scored on Sarah Gray's double to left field. Gray went to third on the play and scored on Rachel Wood's sacrifice fly. UIS added to its lead in the third as Gray tripled to right center and scored on Brooke Carroll's single to left center.
The Lady Miners were held hitless until one out in the third when
Stefani Moore (Springfield, Mo./Kickapoo ) reached on a bunt single to the pitcher. In the fifth inning S&T brought the tying run to the plate with two outs but
Lauren Briggs (LaMonte, Mo./Knob Noster) flew out to center to end the inning. The Lady Miners got on the board in the sixth.
Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) walked and stole second to start the inning.
Kaylea Smith (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) battled through an eight pitch at-bat before singling back up the middle to score Michaelis.
Maggie Schroeder (Bonner Springs, Kan./Basehor-Linwood) then walked on a 3-2 pitch to put runners at first and second with no one out. Lybarger grounded into a force play as Schroeder was out at second. After a strikeout,
Kate Runyan (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove) came off the bench to deliver a pinch hit single to score Smith to make it 3-2. The rally ended when Moore grounded out to first to end the inning.
S&T was retired in order in the seventh to end the contest. Moore and Smith had four of the Lady Miners six hits in the contest with Smith and Runyan driving in the runs. Lawson also added a pinch hit single. Keal suffered the loss allowing three runs - one earned - on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk in seven innings of work.
In the nigthcap the Prairie Stars got three straight hits in the second to score their first run. They added to their lead with two more in the fourth. UIS had runners at second and third with no one out and
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) nearly pitched out of the jam. She got back-to-back strikeouts before allowing a two-run single to Danielle Abbott.
Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) came on in relief to end the inning. The Stars added an unearned run in the fifth to make it 4-0.
The Lady Miners had runners on base in four of the first five innings but were never able to get a runner to second base. They had four hits in the second contest with Briggs, Schroeder, Runyan and Strope accounting for all the hits. Strope took the loss allowing three runs - two earned - on five hits with five punchouts and two walks in 3.2 innings. Duncan went the rest of the way allowing an unearned run on four hits with a strikeout.
S&T ended its season with a record of 15-38, 12-24 in league play.
